MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL OPHUS
Dear Fairview Families,
It was such a pleasure to be able to host our annual grade level winter concerts on Wednesday and Thursday evening for our community and on Friday morning for our students! We haven’t had this opportunity since December of 2019, and hearing our grade levels singing once again all together was quite special. Our students did an amazing job, and we thank Mrs. Happ in particular for leading our school through these wonderful concerts. It takes a lot of time and planning to put this together and she did a great job! Special thanks to the staff who attended in support of our students and music program and to all of the parents, guardians and guests for being an enthusiastic audience. Our 5th graders will be the next group to perform this coming spring as their 5th grade musicals are coming up in April. We have more excitement still to come in February, so please take some time to read through my updates below and the entire Fairview newsletter to keep yourself informed. Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Dan Ophus
Fairview Principal
Valentine's Day Parties: We are looking forward to our PTO sponsored Valentine's Day parties coming up on Tuesday afternoon! Our parent volunteers have been busy planning for this fun event and we look forward to celebrating together as a school. If your child is bringing valentines in to share with classmates, please remember that the sharing of food is prohibited. If your child comes to school with food to share, we would have to send it back home with them. If the valentine comes with some other type of toy, sticker, trinket, etc. that’s no problem.
Special Area Open House: As part of our February check-ins with parents, our special area teachers would like to invite any interested parents and students to attend an open house on Thursday, February 16th from 3:30-6:30 pm. The purpose of this time will be to learn more about and explore what your child is doing when they attend PE, Art, Music and LRC. Mrs. Kennedy, Mrs. Morrison, Mrs. Piscitello, Mrs. Happ, Mrs. Larson and Mrs. Soderholm will be in attendance to show families examples of what students are doing during specials and educate parents about their respective curricula. Students and parents together can tour through the gym, library, art and music rooms for this unique experience. We hope you are able to join our special area staff for this opportunity!
GoGuardian Virtual Parent Session: Have you ever wondered how you can monitor, pause, or adjust internet access on your child’s school-issued chromebook during out-of-school hours? If so, our Instruction & Technology coaches in D57 are hosting a parent training on how they can utilize GoGuardian to make this happen. Click on this link for more information about the event including how to register for the training.
Falcon Rally: The Fairview PTO is excited to hold its Falcon Rally fundraiser on Friday, February 24th. Students are encouraged to talk to their family and other relatives to get pledges and raise money to keep our Fairview PTO running strong. In addition to keeping our PTO programs and activities up and running, the PTO has also agreed to help with a purchase for a new digital sign outside our building. It will use the same brick pillars that are on our current sign, but will be digital, which is a big improvement and much more dynamic. Their goal is to raise $30,000 for the PTO in support of these programs and this purchase. There will be some exciting prizes for both the entire school and individual students to win as part of Falcon Rally, and the fundraiser will culminate with a pickleball extravaganza in PE classes on Friday, February 24th. All students will be assigned PE on that Friday even if they don't typically have it in their schedule. For more information, please review this link.
PTO Sponsors: Fairview Family Night with the Chicago Wolves: Are you interested in watching a professional hockey game with members of the Fairview community AND listen to our very own Fairview Chorus perform before puck drop? If so, click this link for details on how to sign up! All students who attend must be accompanied by an adult and a purchased ticket is required for both students and adults in attendance. Sign up by March 5th if you are interested!
Please contact Jessica Talbot (jtalbot@d57.org) or Cindy Buell (cbuell@d57.org) if you need assistance with language translation of any of the flyers that appear in the newsletter.
DID YOUR STUDENT'S END OF DAY TRAVEL PLANS CHANGE AT THE LAST MINUTE?
NATIONAL CHILDREN'S DENTAL HEALTH MONTH
February is National Children's Dental Health Month! Many people are not aware how important dental health is and how much it can impact our overall health. When we do not properly care for our teeth, such as brushing, flossing, and visiting the dentist regularly, our mouths can become filled with bacteria that have been shown to increase our risk of endocarditis, cardiovascular disease, pneumonia as well as pregnancy or birth complications. It has also been found that the number of teeth we have is significantly correlated to our life expectancy.
As an activity for students, click on the graphic for a "Smile Care Chart" that you can print out for use at home. We also have hard copies in the office available. Students who complete the chart and turn it in to the health office by the end of the month will be entered into a drawing for a small prize.
As always, please let me know if you have any questions!
Sincerely,
Kelly Brunning, RN, BSN, PEL-CSN

FAIRVIEW FAMILY NIGHT WITH THE CHICAGO WOLVES
DRESS FOR OUTDOOR RECESS
As the weather turns cooler, please make sure your children are dressed to go out for recess. Unless it is raining or the temperature /wind chill is too cold (15 degrees or below, real-feel temperature) the students will go out every day for recess. Please write your student’s last name on a tag in their coat and snowpants.
All students will go out with their class unless we have a doctor’s note limiting their participation. If a student has been ill and he/she is not feeling well enough to participate in all the activities of the school day, perhaps another day at home will insure a healthy return to school.
