EAST-WEST STREETS IN THE DOWNTOWN GRID
As noted last week, the planners of Florence in 1818 determined that all but three of the north-south streets in what we know as the downtown grid should bear the names of some of Alabama's indigenous trees. At the same time, it seemed appropriate for most of the east-west streets to reflect the names of Alabama rivers: Tennessee, Tombigbee, Alabama and Mobile are examples. How, then, did College Street get its name? Just as Seminary Street was so named in anticipation of a university or seminary to be located on it, the planners decided on College Street as the name for the location of another school. Sure enough, a small, two-room building was erected on College Street at a site approximately where, today, the recently-closed animal shelter is located adjacent to Dr. Hicks Boulevard. Then in 1891, it became the location of the grand school building named for Governor Robert M. Patton. (Next Week: Ann Royall Visits Florence)
