Message From the Principal, Mrs. Blevins

On Thursday, March 9th, WWMS participated in #SELday. This is an international movement to support social and emotional learning embedded within schools. SEL Day is when we take time to acknowledge the many social-emotional learning strategies that our school has implemented to address students’ needs.

Social-emotional learning is the process by which students understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Research has found that sustained and comprehensive SEL programming in schools positively impacts academic achievement, social and emotional well-being, and classroom behavior.

Please take a look at the pictures below highlighting some of the activities that students participated in last Thursday to further develop the CASEL SEL competencies.

Message from Assistant Principal Mrs. Mendiratta

Dear Parents & Students,

We are proud to announce that our high school students started an organization called “Period@Edison” an initiative committed to addressing period stigma. As part of this project, they have raised funds to install pad dispensers in our school and provide free pads for the students.

Their efforts have assisted in supporting an inclusive and welcoming school environment. We applaud the commitment of our high school students to make a positive impact in our school and community. They are an inspiration to us all, and their efforts serve as an example of what can be achieved together for a common cause.

Thank you again to our high school students for their outstanding work, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact of their efforts in school.

6th Grade News

What’s going on in the sixth grade?

In Math 6 classes, students are finishing up their unit on rational numbers and the coordinate plane. To help review for their test, students played a rational number football frenzy game in which they competed in two teams against each other to answer questions, spin a spinner, and move a certain amount of yards on a football field to try and score a touchdown!

Students in 6th grade Pre-Algebra are continuing their unit on proportional relationships and slope. So far they’ve made some real-life connections to rollercoasters and are curious to continue learning the different ways to calculate slope.

Finally, the 6th grade students wrapped up their St. Jude Math-a-Thon on February 14th. We are very proud of how much they raised…stay tuned for the final amount!!

In science class, students just finished creating a travel brochure, taking them back in time to a period in Earth’s history. Students had to consider: If travelers had a time machine and could go back millions of years, what would they see? What kind of activities could they do? In what kind of hotel would they stay? This project concluded our unit on Geologic Time. Next, we’ll start our Weather & Climate unit. Students will learn about weather patterns and use weather maps to predict the weather across the country!

In English class, students are learning various skills to help them read nonfiction texts. This will aid them in their next writing assignment. The research simulation task, also known as argumentative writing, is next on the agenda for our students. Students will either research, or be assigned a topic, and use various types of evidence to support their opinion. Also in English, students are finishing their unit on figurative language. Students learned to identify similes, metaphors, and personification in a variety of fictional stories.

Teacher Spotlight - Our Social Studies Teachers!

Meet the “Social Studies Superheros”: Ms. Spag, Mrs. Sedler, Mrs. Yascko, Ms. Chrapuch, and Ms. Nalepa!

Their superpower? Making learning fun!

From creating “defenders of democracy” to celebrating George Washigton’s birthday, students always have a blast in social studies! Over the past couple of months, students have been learning about the formation of the United States government as well as the presidencies of George Washington and John Adams. To help students learn the important concepts, our “Social Studies Superheros” designed a variety of activities to engage the students, including the following:

  • An interactive simulation to explain the issues discussed at the Constitutional Convention (George Washington himself made an appearance!)

  • Superhero (“Defender of Democracy) creations and discussions to promote one of the democratic principles

  • Games, including Headbandz and Jenga, to review the Constitution.

  • Stem challenges to determine the traits of an effective leader

  • Fly swatter and play doh activities to differentiate between the beliefs of the first two political parties

  • Chalk Talk creations and discussions to analyze Washington’s Farewell Address

  • More games, including pong, golf, and bowling, to reinforce the ideas important to the Adams administration.

  • And so much more!

For 8th Grade Students: Student Learning and Achievement Aerospace and Mechanical (SLAAM) Engineering Summer Academy: Application Deadline 3/31/23

Graduating 8th grade and 9th - 12th grade students from the Edison Township School District are invited to attend the Student Learning and Achievement Aerospace and Mechanical (SLAAM) Engineering Summer Academy at Rutgers University. The purpose of this program is to introduce high school students to engineering research and inspire them to become STEM professions!

The Student Learning and Achievement Aerospace and Mechanical (SLAAM) Engineering Summer Academy is a non-residential summer program aimed at academically talented and motivated high school students. SLAAM provides opportunities for students to pursue their intellectual curiosity and meet others who share their engineering interests and abilities. SLAAM is a selective program for high-achieving high school students who wish to engage in meaningful research and professional development at Rutgers’ Busch Campus. Financial aid is available.

A description of the SLAAM program and application is found at: (http://mae.rutgers.edu/student-learning-and-achievement-aerospace-and-mechanical-slaam-engineering-summer-academy).

SLAAM introduces high school students to ongoing topics of research and interests within the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at Rutgers. The SLAAM program is HYBRID in 2023, therefore allowing students from NJ, PA, and NY to easily attend. The majority of the SLAAM program will be remote with limited activities in person, i.e. campus facility tours.

The SLAAM fellows participate in supervised research and learning experiences that are taught by Rutgers faculty and engineers that are assisted by undergraduate and graduate student mentors with expertise in engineering and computer science.

A limited number of partial scholarships are available for economically disadvantaged students.
