Watertown Middle School 2021-2022
Happy Friday! I hope you all have been having a lovely summer. My children and I have been having a wonderful time with family and friends, and I am rested, rejuvenated, and excited to begin the new school year with the students, staff, and families of WMS! :)
As more Covid guidance becomes available regarding masking, testing, quarantining, etc., I will share it with you immediately. As a district and community, we will continue to work closely together to ensure everyone is safe in school.
Watertown Middle School's new Assistant Principal, Susan Carle, has been in the office quite a bit, and she and I have been planning for the year. She is meeting many people and learning all about our community and looking forward to meeting all of you as well!
One of the main items I have been working on is the schedule and the cluster placements, using all of the information generated by the guidance counselors, teachers, and your input. We will be sharing Cluster Assignments in mid-August with all students and families.
In the meantime, teachers have confirmed their supply lists for Back-to-School, and here they are:
Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns. I look forward to working with all of you this year, and welcoming all of the new grade 6 families into the WMS Community! There are many ways for families to get involved at WMS, and I will include more information about the PTO, School Site Council, and Parent/Caregiver Diversity Council in my upcoming newsletters.
Please be well and take good care of one another.

All my best,
WMS School Tours 8/26 and 8/30!
- Thursday, August 26th at 10:00 am
- Monday, August 30th at 1:00 pm
We will meet at those times in the WMS Auditorium for a brief welcome and overview of middle school and a Q & A session. Please enter through the Waverley Street entrance and wear a mask. Regardless of vaccination status, everyone must wear a mask when inside the school buildings at this point.
After the Q & A session, we will break into smaller groups and tour the school. My hope is to have some 7th and 8th-grade experts join us to share their knowledge of WMS!
ALL students are welcome to come with their families! To be sure, entering 6th graders are excited to see the building and start learning their way around. However, I am sure there are entering 7th and 8th graders who would also like to see where their classrooms may be and to refamiliarize themselves with the school, especially if they were virtual last year. You are also welcome to come to both tours if you'd like.
We look forward to seeing you on these two tour dates! The custodians have been working tirelessly to get the building ready for everyone, and it's starting to shine!

Watertown Middle School Math Department Updates
On Tuesday, June 1, Mathematics Curriculum Coordinators Elizabeth Kaplan and Dan Wulf, along with Mathematics Coach Shephali Chokshi, presented to the Curriculum/Policy Sub-committee of the School Committee regarding mathematics at WMS. Below is the summary of their presentation:
Highlights of 2020/2021
All math teachers worked diligently and collaboratively to implement a common curriculum: Illustrative Math/Desmos.
WMS hired a new math coach, Shephali Chokshi, who supported and coached all math teachers. This included planning and implementing the curriculum, co-teaching, and working with students.
In addition to middle school staff, elementary coaches assisted in purposeful planning for students transitioning from 5th to 6th-grade math.
Updates for 2021/2022 School Year
7th-grade math has historically had two levels of the same math content - PreAlgebra and Advanced PreAlgebra. For the upcoming school year, 7th-grade math will be similar to 6th-grade math in that it will be one level of math. Beyond 7th grade math, the following is currently offered in Watertown:
8th Grade: Two levels of math (8th Grade Math & Algebra); 9th Grade: Algebra and Geometry
The math department will be conducting an external math program review in the fall of 2021. For this review, math education leaders from other districts will spend time in Watertown analyzing documents, observing classes, and meeting with teachers, students, and parents. We will be looking for parents to participate in forums with these external reviewers.
Teachers will continue to participate in math coaching focused on curriculum, instructional practices, and differentiating instruction to meet the needs of all math learners.
We will be using Zearn in grades 6 and 7 as a resource for the middle school WIN (What I Need) block.
Next Steps and Further Resources
A Middle School Parent Math Night will be scheduled for the Fall of 2021
