Astro September Update
Dream big. Reach for the stars. Together we achieve success!
Principal's Message
Dear Families,
We are excited to start our school year. Lots of work has been happening inside and outside of our school. The school has new paint, the gym is ready for PE and we have a new heating and cooling system! Our new outdoor learning space has benches and will soon have plants. We are waiting for cooler temperatures to do the planting.
You may have questions about what school will look like and the health and safety protocols. Here are some key points.
- Masks must be worn by everyone inside the school building. Masks need to be worn outside when students are within 3 feet of each other.
- Breakfast and lunch will be served in the cafeteria. Students will have assigned tables that are 3 feet apart. Once they are done eating they will put their masks on.
- Students and staff will not be eating in the classrooms. If a class has snack time, it will be done outside.
- In the classrooms, students will be spaced at least 3 feet apart as much as possible.
- We will not have volunteers on campus until at least October 18th. More information to come.
More information about our return to school is available on our district website.

Ice Cream Social Details
We are excited to have our first in-person community event. Please make sure to wear masks since there will be many people in attendance. You will have an opportunity to tour our new gym. Masks will be required at all times unless you are eating your ice cream. Please socially distance yourself from other families when you eating your ice cream.
You can enter the campus through the gate to the left of the office building or through the gate behind the cafeteria.
You can drop off these supplies at the table assigned to your student’s class.
Copy paper
Kleenex
Loose-leaf college ruled paper (5th and 6th grades)
The remaining supplies can be brought on the first day of class.
Teachers will be under the covered area outside of the classrooms ready to meet you. Classrooms will be closed during this event. The K-3 teachers will only be here on Tuesday and 4-6 teachers will only be here on Wednesday. You can still drop off supplies on either day.
Arrival and Dismissal Procedures
We are excited to return to a more typical start time this year! Our doors will open at 7:30 a.m. for students who will want to eat breakfast (free for all students). Students coming for breakfast will go directly to the cafeteria, pick up breakfast and sit in an assigned seat. They must stay in the breakfast location until it is time to go to class. All students who ride the bus will be let in upon arrival and have the opportunity to have breakfast.
Students who are not eating breakfast go to the gym. They will sit in lines by class until they are dismissed to go to class.
Parents cannot enter the building or walk their students to class. You may walk them to the gate or the gym door. If you choose to do this, please park in the parking lot.
At dismissal, if you are going to park and meet your student, you can meet them at the gate between the gym and cafeteria. You can also do drive up in front of the school. We will bring the students out to your car. If you go through the drive-up lanes, do not get out of your car.
Volunteers
We are looking forward to having volunteers in our school this year! For the beginning of the year, we want to focus on setting our routines with the students and developing powerful relationships. Depending on current health and safety guidelines, we hope to welcome volunteers during quarter one. More information to come! This is a great time to be sure that your background check is current! Go to: https://www.hsd.k12.or.us/Page/163 to fill out the volunteer application.
School supplies & Chromebooks
Student supplies will be for individual use. Items which are typically shared (i.e. Kleenex, copy paper, etc) will be collected and stored for use when needed. Students are to bring their HSD assigned Chromebooks (fully charged) and chargers to school. With a huge thank you to the HSD Technology Bond, we will have new Chromebooks (faster and better!) for our students this fall. We will be checking out new Chromebooks to students and collecting the old ones.

SERVICES OFFERED FOR TALENTED AND GIFTED (TAG) STUDENTS
Parents are welcome to refer their child for services designed for students identified as talented and gifted. Students who score at or above the 97th percentile on a nationally standardized, norm-referenced test of overall reading or math or on a mental abilities test, and have other confirming evidence that they learn at a rapid rate and advanced level, are identified as TAG students. With parent input, individual plans are made to adjust the rate and level of the student’s instruction to meet his or her specific needs.
