PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear PK8 Families,
As many of you know, Paonia K-8 was recognized by Governor Polis during his annual State of the State speech this past week. It was such an honor for Mr. Frazier, Ms. Randall, and me to represent the students and staff of PK8 at this event. As Governor Polis said, The work our students and teachers are doing at school everyday are "models, that other schools can follow...schools have a lot to learn from what works in the state." If you would like to watch the speech you can access it from the link to House Legislative Sessions at this website: https://coloradochannel.net/
As we start the second semester, I will be sharing various tips and tricks for student success throughout the semester. This week I'd like to focus on homework. According to Gail Belsky, there are six ways kids may like doing homework differently:
- Moving Around: Some kids, especially kids with who are active, need to stand or move to use up extra energy. Moving around actually helps them focus.
- Leaning on Elbows: It may not look like a great position for concentrating. But leaning on elbows can provide sensory input for kids who seek it.
- Wearing Headphones: For some kids, headphones can tune out distracting noise. For others, music or other sounds add some needed stimulation.
- Body Doubling: Just like some kids need quiet to concentrate, others do better with people around. For some kids, it can be a form of “body doubling.”
- Relaxing on the couch: Being relaxed doesn’t mean kids aren’t working hard. Lying on a couch or curling up in a chair may be more comfortable than sitting straight up.
- Changing locations: Changing locations can provide a brain break when homework is hard or frustrating. It helps kids reset and get back to work.

Grief Group for Students
Has your child's life been touched by the death of a loved one?
Some common reactions to loss are:
• A decline in school performance.
• Changes in sleeping and eating patterns.
• Feeling that nobody understands.
• Changes in behavior. Your child may react to situations in an unusual manner, such as being angry more frequently and with little apparent reason.
If your child is in grades 6-8, we invite them to attend a grief group now being formed and co- facilitated by Hopewest Kids and Ms. Lukez (school counselor). The group will meet weekly for six to eight weeks for 40 minute sessions.
Each session will include grief education and small group discussion. Activities such as writing, art, and literature will assist participants in coping with issues of grief and loss.
A signed parent/guardian consent form is required. For more information, please contact Ms. Lukez at 970-527-4882 or Claire Dauwe from HopeWest Kids at 970-874-6823.
