"the little horse is newlY". by e.e. cummings
One of the pieces of literature that Mr. Birkway teaches his class about is e.e. cummings' poem "the little horse is newlY(p. 123)". this poem relates to Sal how the horse Knows nothing but feels everything; this happens when Ben (the boy that Sal likes) is reading Sals palm. Ben holds Sals hand and Sal repeats in Sals head "I feel like the newly born horse who knows nothing but feels everything(p. 124) ." http://plagiarist.com/poetry/9241/
"The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Another time that Sharon Creech uses references to literature is when Mr Birkway reads "The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls(p. 182)." The part of the poem that relates to Sal is "The day returns, but nevermore returns the traveler to the shore and the tide rises, the tide falls." How this relates to Sal is that Sals mom died and Sal acts like nothing happened and her life went on like nothing happened(p. 263) . It is like how the traveler didn't return but everything went on as if nothing happened.
Pandora's Box
Another way that Sharon Creech uses reference to literature is when Pandora opened the box all of these bad things came out and at the bottom was hope(p. 170). This relates to Sal and Phoebe when all of these bad things are happening to them like Sal and Phoebe's moms leaving there is always hope like Sal and phoebe's moms coming back(p. 176).
