Headphones

Please ensure that your child has a working pair of headphones that are compatible to their Chromebook; as they will need to use these on our upcoming IAR assessments in April. Mrs. Filippi will be sharing information with families about the IAR testing for April. Thank you!

Spring Conferences

Spring Conferences are scheduled for Thursday, March 19th from 3:30-8:00 pm & Friday, March 20th from 8:00 am-noon. Using the information that Mrs. Filippi shared on Wednesday, February 19th, please sign up for the 15-minute time slot that works best for you and your child.

In order to ensure that students are also a part of the reflection and goal setting process, the third grade students will be joining us for our conference time. For those that may not be able to attend due to spring break plans, students will be creating video presentations that they can share with you at a time in which it is convenient for your family. Thank you for your support & collaboration!

English Language Arts

ELA

We’re knee deep in our mentor text, Weather, by Seymour Simon. Students have been exposed to higher-level, content-based vocabulary. They’ll also utilizing the illustrations and words in the rich text as evidence to answer research questions about nature. We're specifically utilizing the cause and effect strategy to help us better understand scientific topics in informational text. We’re beginning to look at clouds in a whole new way!

Writing

Student authors will also discover how information can be used in a way to create a presentation, supporting a topic with facts, definitions and details. Through a close look at the scientific lens of weather, we’ll be able to connect our reading & writing lessons to our recent science unit, too! Students will be working to gain and share knowledge, resulting in their own weather news report. They’ll also practice this same form of speech/presentation writing as they create their own video news report to share at our spring conferences!

Math

We are thoroughly enjoying our geometry unit! Students are reveling in the hands-on learning as they are use various math manipulatives such as geoboards, tangrams and evening forming polygons out of toothpick,. They explored the various forms of quadrilaterals by creating anchor chart posters to share through a gallery walk, displaying their mathematical knowledge with others! This week, they’ll explore the attributes of a progression of polygons: rectangles and rhombuses, pentagons, hexagons, heptagons and dodecagons. This week we will also collect and formulate data, based on geometric terms! Gee-we love geometry!

Opportunity Knocks

Opportunity Knocks (extra learning opportunities) are a hit! Kudos to the kiddos that opted to take part in this optional opportunity! Please remember that these activities are completely OPTIONAL. Students can access these opportunities on our Reach for the Stars Google Site!

Students who complete THREE opportunity knocks activities by Friday, will have the chance to enter my class prize bin! If your child is looking for something fun to do this weekend, these just may be the answer you're looking for!
