Emergency Drills

This week we conducted two emergency practice drills. One was a lockdown on Tuesday and the other was an evacuation on Thursday. The children and staff did a remarkable job on both drills especially on our evacuation drill where we had to exit the building and go to St. Joseph's Church. Police were also here to help with the drill. Buses then escorted us back to the building.

Library Update

The library book shelves were installed last week which is such a welcome sight. Mrs. Ward with two special volunteers (Mrs. Sheldon and Mrs. Sousa) have been working hard trying to set up the library for next week. There is a lot of work to be done but they are making huge headway. Here are pictures of the new library shelves.

NBC10 Sunrise Shout-out

As promised, here are the "Shout-Out" videos of our Green Screen Team for NBC10 Sunrise. They asked us to video it at 3 different locations. My personal favorite is the one on the playground. Channel 10 broadcasted our video on Monday, September 23.

Open House Nights

Thank you all for coming to our school to visit classrooms this week during Open House. Students are always so excited for this day. As the school year continues, parents can ask for a conference anytime. You just need to email the teacher and request it. Typically, most wait until after the first trimester report cards go home. I'd like to also say that, there may be times that a teacher or principal will want a conference as well. Just like teachers will respond to a request, I expect parents will do the same if one of us call for a meeting. We are a TEAM and we must all work together for the betterment of your child.

Great Opportunity for Hope Valley Students

Attention parents of HVES aspiring actors! The Chariho High School Theatre Company is currently rehearsing for their bi-annual production of A Christmas Carol and they are in need of a Tiny Tim! Auditions for the role of Tiny Tim are being held October 2nd at 5:30pm in the Chariho Middle School auditorium. Readings will be from the script, so nothing needs to be prepared ahead of time. Show dates are December 6th, 7th, and 8th. If you have any questions, please contact director Rebecca Burns at rebecca.burns@chariho.k12.ri.us.

Arriving to School

K-4 Parents - When dropping off your child between 8:25-8:35, only three cars at a time are allowed to drop off children by the Kindergarten door. If there are cars waiting, please be sure you are in in the stacking lane along the curb. This is imperative because buses start rolling in around 8:20 and they need a clear path to the back of the school. Also, to make this run as efficiently as possible, your child should be able to unbuckle and leave the car on their own. If they are young you should practice this with your child. It is a STOP - DROP - GO system.

PreK Parents - Arrival time is AFTER the K-4 drop off. That means you shouldn’t arrive BEFORE8:35 because it is causing confusion for K-4 parents and there is congestion for buses and mini-buses. Therefore, after 8:35, preschool parents can wait in the stacking lane. Only 4 cars at a time in the stacking lane; otherwise, please wait along the side of Thelma Drive until there is room to move into the stacking lane. At 8:45, we start to allow cars to drive behind the school. Safety is top priority so I appreciate your assistance with this matter. If it does not improve, I will have to revisit the entire pre-school drop off system which will not be as easy as it is currently. Thank you.

Dismissal Procedures

Dismissal for K-4 parent pick ups start at 3:20. Bus dismissal is at 3:25. For parents picking up students, the procedure is for parents to wait outside the library door until a staff member opens the door to let parents in. The end of the day is very hectic and we cannot have people buzz in at the main office to sign out their child to bypass the line. It is also a safety concern. However, if you need to pick up your child early, you can certainly go to the main office to sign them out but as a reminder it will count as an early dismissal unless there is a medical note. Thanks for your assistance on this important matter.
