Mrs. Naugle distributed We Care coat letters to all students currently participating in the federal assistance program. Look for those to come home and get them back to us ASAP if your child needs a coat this season. If your family is not receiving federal assistance and your child needs a coat, call SMS and let Mrs. Naugle know you'd like a coat form sent home.
Dine In December 3rd!
On Monday, December 3rd, many families around the country will be sitting down together for a meal in celebration of a nationwide initiative called Dine In Day sponsored by the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. The initiative was put in place to increase family social interactions during dinner time during the busy lifestyle of the typical person. We are encouraging you and your family to sign up and participate in this nationwide event.
An additional focus this year is to put your devices away to limit any distractions. Students in FACS classes learn about the importance of table settings, manners, and sitting down at the table for a meal with others. Mr. Shoultz is encouraging you to take time out of our busy lifestyle to commit to dining in for a meal with loved ones. 7th-grade students will be participating in dining in during the first week of December.
You can sign up here Sign Up Form. Whenever signing up, be sure to mention that you heard this from Mr.Shoultz! We would love to see many families on the map linked here! We would also love to be the top participant school in the region! Sign up. And pull up a chair to your dining table on December 3rd!
Keep cooking!
Mr. Tevin Shoultz

8th Grade Parent News!
We have been working hard with 8th graders to make sure they have good information about their upcoming high school program choices. In September, we held a classroom guidance lesson with the SMS counselors to introduce upcoming choices. Earlier this week, a group of staff and students from both New Tech and High Schools that Work came to SMS to talk to 8th graders about things to consider when making a program decision. Next Monday and Tuesday mornings, our 8th-graders will travel to the high school for an in-depth tour of the building and the programs.
We have encouraged our 8th graders to keep the following in mind:
Students should focus on themselves and what program choice would be best for them individually. The decision should not be based on what friends choose! Students will see their friends, regardless of program choice.
New Tech is nationwide learning model based on Project Based Learning. Find out more about the New Tech network and Project Based Learning at https://newtechnetwork.org/.
All elective/choice classes are open regardless of the program they choose as long as the electives/choice classes fit into their schedule around the core academic classes.
We also want to invite all 8th graders and their parents to an SHS Spaghetti Supper/Info Night on Wednesday, Nov. 28 from 5pm - 7pm. You can eat spaghetti with us in the Commons from 5pm-6pm; visit with SHS teachers and extra-curricular sponsors; AND attend an important information session by guidance counselors about the new graduation pathways! You will also get important information about how to fill out course selection sheets that will start the high school journey.
Lastly, the SHS guidance counselors will be sitting down with each individual 8th grader at SMS in December to go over course selection sheets, talk about future career thoughts, and make a 4-year plan for SHS.
