Cougar Chronicles
March 6, 2022
Dear LSE Family,
On Friday, news broke across the Kansas City Metro area of the school shooting at Olathe East High School. News like this is always very difficult to watch, hear and even process. As a parent, caregiver of children, and even school staff lots of questions and fears arise. Are schools safe? How are we checking in with kids? How are we teaching conflict resolution skills?
At LSE, our entire building staff is trained in trauma informed practices each year. We believe relationships are the core of everything inside our building. Once students enter the building at arrival, they have already encountered at least two adults with a morning greeting. All students enter the building with zero voices. We do this because the quiet helps our students calm their minds and bodies to be ready for learning. At their classroom doors, students triage with their teacher. They choose a morning greeting and let their teacher know what zone they are starting their day off in (red, yellow, blue or green). This alerts staff as to what support to give students at arrival.
Inside classrooms - each classroom has a chillzone. This is a safe place where students can go inside their own classroom to get themselves regulated and ready to learn. If a student needs more intensive assistance, we have multiple trained staff that are called to walk the student through calming techniques or work through more intensive triage.
If conflicts arise, students are taught and encourgaged to use Kelso's choices as a way to solve conficts. It is normal for children to have conflict. We want them to know they have tools to solve them but adults are ready to assist.
As parents and caregivers - how can you help? Talk to your children! Notice changes in their behaviors or demeanors. Be actively involved in their social media - they are children and not fully capable of managing social media.
Together we can help all of our children thrive and be successful.
Much Love,
Mrs. Sanders, Principal

WE NEED YOUR HELP GETTING STUDENTS TO SCHOOL DAILY AND ON TIME!
Please work to get your children to school on time and get them to school each day! When students are late or miss school all together, they miss valuable instruction time. Students can enter the building at 8:10 each morning. They are considered tardy at 8:25. We really need your help in getting your children to school on time. This helps get their day started off in a positive way. Most of our classroms start the day with a short family meeting to discuss current events, social emotional well skills, or classroom expectations. They move right into instruction of math or reading immediately. It is imperative your children are at school on time!

WE KNOW TIMES ARE HARD FOR SOME OF OUR FAMILIES! USE OUR PANTRY!
Did you know LSE has a food pantry and clothing closet? Last year we collaborated with our district facilities department and the Summit Church to convert one of our storage rooms into this space! This fall the Summit Church built us an amazing shelving system for shoes, clothes and coats so that we could stay organized!
If you have needs for winter coats, jackets, shoes, socks, or clothing, please do not hesitate to reach out to our front office! We can schedule a time for you to come in through our gym door and help you find what you need!
We also have a food pantry for non-perishable food items. We use these items to fill our two pantries out front but also can help families that may need food!
We accept donations too! We especially need nonperishable food items, self care items such as shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, deodorant, and bath soap!
Call our front office if we can be of assistance or to drop off donations! 816-986-3340.
