June 5, 2022
Happy Pride Month! As the 2021-22 school year wraps up, I reflect on everything we have accomplished and all the obstacles we have overcome. Thank you for your partnership in this very trying year.
As we look forward to the 22-23 school year, we are looking for 1 or 2 family representatives to serve on the Building Leadership Team. That team is responsible for writing the Continuous School Improvement Plan (CSIP), planning a budget for the 23-24 school year that will help us carry out the CSIP, and writing a professional development plan for staff. Your time commitment is at least 1 hour long meeting every month. Multiple meetings in late February - mid March during budgeting season, and time spent working with the families you represent.
If you are interested in joining the Building Leadership Team, please send me a statement of interest with your thoughts on our School Improvement Plan, your thoughts on staff professional development, the Seattle Public Schools strategic plan and how JRE might provide a warm and welcoming environment.
In addition to opportunities for the Building Leadership Team, JRE may have opportunities for parents to help us hire for important staffing positions this summer. If you're interested in serving on a hiring team, you'll first need to take an anti-bias training. If you're interested in these opportunities, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org
- Tuesday, June 7: virtual PTA meeting at 7pm
- Friday, June 10: Green Team vegetable planting at lunchtime recess. Volunteer!
- Wednesday, June 15: Field Day! 8:50am - 10:50am
- Chris Daigre back for a Jazzy June this year as all grades will have a chance to learn more about Jazz dance.
- 5th graders have the special opportunity to work on improvisation and theatre skills with Tracy Hiland.
- Friday, June 17: last day of school and 5th grade promotion (1-hour early dismissal)
Bell Time JRE Survey Results
Per SPS there will NOT be bell time changes for the upcoming 22-23 school year. We may need to circle back to this survey next year. Thank you to all who responded to our survey! Go Otters!
As staffing season is wrapping up, I'd like to announce some changes to the JRE staff for the 22/23 school year. Please keep in mind that JRE is seeing reductions in staffing based on items below:
- SPS did not make any staffing adjustments in October of 2021. Currently class sizes range from 14-21 students at JRE. Next year, class sizes will be much closer to contracted ratios of 18-28.
- JRE used levy funds earned in the 19/20 school year to fund a Head Teacher and 1 General Education Instructional Assistant. Those funds are no longer available.
- As we move from a pandemic phase of COVID, to an endemic phase of COVID, some staff are choosing to move to a different areas of the state and country.
- I do not expect many further changes in staffing for the 22/23 school year.
In all, the following positions have been reduced from JRE: 3 classroom teachers, a .5 art teacher, .6 resource teacher, the head teacher listed above and the general education IA listed above.
I'd like to thank the following for their work this year and as long as they've been at JRE: head teacher Aron Bodwtich, classroom teacher Michael Caoagdan, classroom teacher Faosiyah Madres, art teacher Katie Hanson, instructional assistant Ting Phonsonam and classroom teacher Kristen Reeves. Additionally, I'd like to thank office assistant Michelle Dougherty, access teacher Kayla Drummond, counselor Ximena Grollmus, and administrative secretary Dana Keene for their work and wish them all the best in their next ventures. Finally, a well-deserved congratulations goes to instructional assistant Ana Lemoine as she is retiring after years of service to Seattle Public Schools.
Later this Spring, or perhaps into summer, I'll announce who will serve as the Administrative Secretary and Elementary School Assistant for 22/23 and beyond.
Finally, I'd like to welcome the following:
- Kate Wise who will serve as the Resource Room Teacher. Kate comes to us from Bagley Elementary.
- Amy McCue, who will serve as a social worker at JRE. Amy comes to us with years of experience as a principal, assistant principal and social worker and school counselor.
- Ambler Goddin who will serve as an Access teacher for the 22/23 school year. Ambler is moving from Virginia, where she has served as an inclusion general education teacher to Seattle with her family this summer.

That’s an early release Wednesday. We need your help to make it happen. Super fun!
