Mrs. Greene's 3rd Grade
February 7, 2020
A GREAT WEEK!
That was THE FASTEST week of the school year, hands down! Seems like Monday was yesterday. We accomplished so much, worked extremely hard, and had a very positive attitude about all happenings in Room 9. I loved every single minute of it!
Thank you, Mrs. Frey (Lucy's mom), for talking to our students at lunch about the SCIENCE FAIR. I attached the Science Fair packet (at the bottom of this newsletter) in case your child is interested in participating. We hope to have GREAT participation for this very worthwhile activity.
Also attached to this newsletter is our CLASS LIST which should help you make Valentines for each student. The white bag should be decorated at home. Once your child finishes decorating it, he/she may bring it to school, along with their Valentines, and begin distributing them to their friends. They will spend time during the party next Friday opening and reading their Valentines.
Don't forget about the BINGO READING CHALLENGE. So far, Melina, Chris, Ben, and Maren have earned a Bingo.
That's all I have for now...

Special Helper - Gabby
Amazing Things I Saw and Heard in Room 9...
- On a really challenging math word problem today, Max created a number sentence using a VARIABLE. It was quite impressive!
- During math, I saw Aahan erasing some of his work. When I asked him about it, he told me he wanted it to be neater!!!
- The day we had a two-hour delay I heard a group of girls talking about how they didn't sleep in. Maren chimed in..."I did - I need my beauty sleep!"
- Lucy is worried about a classmate because the classmate just doesn't seem to be him/herself. She didn't disclose the name of the classmate, but she mentioned it during Community Circle and we helped her brainstorm ideas on ways to help the student. She's so caring!
- Phoebe was excited to have her after school Spanish club meet this week. She wore several Spanish related items as a way to "gear up" for her meeting. I love that she loves to learn!
- It's so fun to watch Melina during Grammar/Word Study instruction. You would think she was competing on a TV Game Show due to her enthusiasm and zest during instruction!
WOW!!! I realize I have several more good news items to share, so --- I'll wait and share them next week!
February 10-14
Reading: Character's Viewpoint and THEME
- These two reading skills are very important. You must infer (which we have been working) to be able to grasp these skills. We will work on these skills and how to respond to a comprehension question using RAP (restate, answer, prove) all next week.
Math: Unit 6 -
We are learning a lot about how to break down a word problem or a lengthy multi-step performance math problem into smaller steps to truly understand what is being asked. This is very challenging, but I am seeing great gains! We will work on multiplication/division diagrams next week. We are also extending our knowledge of basic fractions into mixed numbers and plotting fractions and mixed numbers on a number line.
Writing: Persuasive - Opinion
Skills your child is working on adding to his/her Opinion/Persuasive writing pieces:
- Bold thesis statement
- 4-5 paragraphs focused on one topic
- Crafting a strong lead
- Conclusion
- Transitions
- Addressing the audience
Word Study - Grammar
- Past tense - Irregular Verbs
Science: Scientific Method
Students are observing their Wisconsin Fast Plants. Be sure to ask your child why we "thinned" our plants.
Each Science Team created a scientific experiment using Froot Loops. We will put our plans into action beginning Monday, February 10.
