Room B23 Weekly News
December 17-21, 2018
Announcements
It's hard to believe it's the week before Winter Break!! As a reminder, Friday, December 21st is a minimum day. School ends at 12:55pm that day. We will have our regular recess (snack), but there will be no lunch at school that day.
Our Winter Party is this Thursday, December 20 from 9:00-11:00am. Thank you to everyone who has offered to send in food and supplies! I will send out an email tomorrow with a list of what I have everyone bringing. If you are still looking for something to donate, I could use mini bagels, cream cheese, squeezable yogurt, a gallon of juice, and 3 bags of red Twizzlers (for a game). Thank you!!
Finally, thank you for supporting our Student Council in their efforts to support Paradise Elementary School. All funds will be going directly to Paradise Elementary School PTO and will be used to purchase technology (the school lost everything they had) for classrooms. The Student Council's Dollar Drive is underway, and we've already raised over $3,000!! Please send dollars (in any denomination) to school between now and Wednesday, or you can now donate online through our PTO website. Thank you for your support and generosity!

Academic Updates
Math
We finished our Decimals Unit last week. This week, we are focusing on problem solving. Students will be working on complex problems that involve multiple steps and extraneous information. Our goal is for students to make sense of math problems, determine which operation(s) they need to use, and persevere in solving them.
We will also have some fun learning about Graphing on a Coordinate Plane. I have a fun "Ugly Sweater" math activity to go along with this standard.
Language Arts
Science
Solar System projects are due tomorrow (Monday, December 17). Students will be presenting their report and their aliens to a small group of students tomorrow. This is always great fun for the students, as well as a way for them to learn about the planets they did not research. It is a highlight of the year for me!
We are also having fun doing Mystery Science lessons that go along with the Solar System unit. Students have learned about Earth's Rotation and Revolution by taking part in "mysteries" and building models to help them understand the patterns we see in the night sky.
Social Studies
We are taking a break from Social Studies while we focus on Science. We will begin learning about the early American Colonies when we return from break.
Our next States & Capitals test will be given this Thursday (December 20th) due to the minimum day on Friday.
