Update from Nepal
To my Palmetto Masters friends :)
I hope you all had a great time celebrating Christmas with your family and friends. I enjoy seeing what is happening via Facebook and it brings a smile to me when I put on my PALM t-shirt here.
Christmas in Nepal:
My classes continue to go well and I enjoy getting to know my students better each week. It is exciting for me to see them progressing especially those who knew very little English when we started back in October.
I also helped a friend, who has an English language school here, with a Christmas night. The evening including decorating cookies, singing carols, games, and the Christmas story. The sugar cookies were made by a company that is owned and run by Tibetan women to help provide jobs for women here. The longer I am here, I meet new people from other non-profits and businesses who are reaching out in Nepal. It is great to be expanding my connections here and how we can work together.
MountainChild works with other organizations to combat the human trafficking issue. As part of the Christmas holiday, the network came together to create packs of shampoo, toothbrushes, etc. and brought them to the girls and ladies in the brothel areas to show them love and care.
I've also been blessed by connecting with an International Bible study group on Thursday nights. One time there was 15 people and 10 different countries represented. It has been a great place for me to meet other people and learn about how they came to Nepal. I spent Christmas with one of the ladies who hosted a get-together.
A Challenging Week:
For me – my most challenging week is when I found out I had contracted lice from someone here in Nepal. I’ve never had it in the States, but I've been told it is more common here. Trying to deal with it definitely challenged me -- due to not having electricity for 9 1/2-11 hours each day, having to boil water so it would be hot for washing, washing everything by hand, putting clothes and linens on the roof to dry, etc.
However, looking back at it now, I see how was used it for good. I’m guessing most of you have never had lice, but it requires someone going by each hair strand to remove eggs. If you never noticed, I have a lot of hair. :) One of the Nepali Mt. Child staff members, Binu, was kind enough to help me. Together it took us about 12-13 hours to go through my hair. She grew-up in a children’s home and does not have family in Kathmandu. I also am not sure if she has that many friends in the area either. With all of that time spent together, we developed a closer relationship and now do things together for fun. I'm very thankful for her and her friendship.
Next?:
Although there are challenges to daily life and everything takes longer, the times I'm teaching and building relationships with the students and others (like Binu), it makes it all worthwhile. I knew Mt. Child could use my skills as an English Second Language teacher, but I didn't realize how many other non-profits would like me to help them. As I am living here, I see the need and opportunities. I will be returning to the states in mid-March, but I am praying and looking at the possibility of returning to Nepal for a longer time.
Thank you again for your support, emails, and encouragement.
Some photos are attached.
Take care and Happy New Year,
-Amy
