Parkhill Primary School Newsletter
Issue 21, Thursday June 28 2018
Principal's Message
Dear Parents/Carers,
What a very busy term this has been! Thank you to everyone who have been involved in events, incursions, excursions, reading or anything else that makes Parkhill a wonderful school to be a part of. Thank you to all of the parents who helped with our move days throughout this term. Going into Semester 2, we will be moving into the Art room and gaining full access to the grounds! The focus will then turn to our school grounds.
DISCO:
Thank you to the PFA who has arranged our school disco again this year. The children will be very excited this evening to dress up in their neon clothes and dance the night away. Tickets can be purchased online at http://www.trybooking.com/WHOO
SWIMMING:
We are again lucky to be able to run a whole school swimming program – the letter came home last week. Please do complete and return the slip as soon as possible, even if you do not intend on participating. The swimming element of the curriculum is very important and the school's swimming program, run through Huntingtower, is excellent. It is important to note that a school swimming program is just that - it is not club swimming. The program is intended to cater for the majority of students at their ability. Huntingtower has wonderful facilities that suit the needs of Parkhill. All notices are due tomorrow.

HOLIDAY FUN:
There is always lots to do during the school holidays! Check out the link below for a variety of fun activities from art and craft to film, sports and much, much more…
END OF TERM:
Children are invited to come to school ‘flying their flag’. They can wear anything they like that represents their own personal identity. It is important to remember we finish at 2:30pm tomorrow. Please come along to our assembly at 2pm where we will say goodbye and good luck to Chloe Mansbridge and Carlie Eriksen.
Have a fun and safe holiday!

Y6 Yakult Excursion
Ever wondered how Yakult is made and packaged? Well, Y6 had the opportunity to find out during an excursion to the factory in Dandenong on Monday. The visit coincided with our investigation into production processes as part of our Creative Capers unit. We toured the facility seeing how they produced their iconic drink and bottle and then combined the two in a very streamlined filling and packaging process. Students were then able to sample Yakult and question our tour guides about their design, production and quality assurance processes. A very informative excursion that ended our finding out with a shot of probiotics. Keep your eyes and ears open for our action - we’ll definitely be keen to see you there!

Foundation Myuna Farm Excursion
The Foundation students had a wonderful time at Myuna Farm. We learned how to milk a goat, we fed the farm animals and we cuddled the baby animals. We saw 10 piglets that were only one day old, we went on a tractor ride and a pony ride and learned about all the amazing things farm animals give us.

Y5/6 Soccer Round Robin
On Friday June 22, selected students from Y5 and Y6 attended the District Soccer Round Robin at Eastern Lions Soccer Ground. It was a beautiful winter's day with plenty of highlights. The girls team did a fantastic job winning three games, drawing one and losing one. The boys team were equally impressive with their two wins and three loses. Well done to everyone who participated, you should be very proud of your achievements!

Bubbles vs. Balloons
Imagine having your wings tangled on a balloon string. Imagine your population decreasing before your very eyes. Imagine getting stuck in a balloon string hanging from a tree.
Do you know where your balloons end up? Balloons are flying into marine wildlife’s habitat. They are affecting them by causing death. They are swallowing parts of balloons because they think it is food. It gets stuck in their throats and they cannot eat. The birds’ wings can get tangled in the balloon string. Their population is lowering because of balloons.
Balloons affect birds, turtles, seals and all other sea marine animals.
Don’t put rubbish in the sea, put rubbish in the bin. Blow bubbles outside and NO balloons.

Chaplain's Corner
If you are lucky enough to be home with the kids these holidays you may be wondering what you can do together to fill up two weeks without breaking the bank or your sanity. Winter can be especially tricky as the weather isn’t always what we’d like it to be. I thought I’d help you out and provide a list of fun, low cost activities/ideas to help you enjoy the holidays.
At home:
Blanket fort
An oldie but a goodie. Give them a pile of blankets, chairs, the kitchen or coffee table and let them build. Want to make it “next level”? Get them to tape some boxes together and make a box maze.
Pizza
Make a homemade pizza! You can make the dough yourself, buy pre-made bases or even use pita bread. The choice is yours but kids love making their own food. It’s a good way to introduce a few veggies they might not have tried before too, the theory being if they can make it themselves they are more likely to want to eat it!
Sleepover
Let their cousins, friends from the country or another suburb (that they don’t see that often) stay over for a sleepover. When there are more kids at our house they seem to entertain themselves better. The added excitement of having someone come over that they don’t often see is a bonus too.
Out and about:
National Gallery of Victoria;
Scienceworks/Museum;
ACMI - ACMI has a whole interactive exhibit dedicated to video games. If that’s your child’s thing they will love it if you sit down and learn to play some new or old favourites together;
Older kids might like to check out some of Melbourne’s laneway art;
Zoo (you only have to pay for the adults in the holidays);
State library (it has a lot of museum/gallery-like exhibits);
This website has a great list of activities including playgrounds www.melbourneplaygrounds.com.au;
Picnic in the Botanic Gardens (or other parks) or take a hike and wear off some of that energy;
Do the grocery shopping at one of the markets eg. Victoria, Dandenong or South Melbourne (especially if you don’t usually shop there). It is also another great way to get kids interested and involved in fresh food. We once made up a kind of scavenger hunt or bingo out a of list of weird and wonderful things to find at the market;
Get to the library, borrow a pile of books and check out what other activities they are also running.
Invite another family along to enjoy these activities with you and as a bonus give you some adult company!
Happy holidays!
