Science: Mr. James
In science this week we will study plants. We will explore how plants are classified, their structures, how they reproduce, and responses they have during growth. During our biology unit we will go on a field trip to Konza Biological Station in Manhattan to get a hands-on feel of nature at work. Be on the lookout for permission slips coming home this week for the field trip.

Social Studies: Mr. Mullins
We'll be finishing up the Hunter-Gatherer phase of human history on Tuesday, then moving in with Early Man as they build more permanent establishments on Wednesday and begin developing Agriculture for Thursday and Friday.
As a note of precaution: We did just have our first quiz, and due to its weight compared to class/homework it may have dropped the grades a little bit, don't worry! We'll have more quizzes that will be able to lift up those grades with good scores, so plenty of room for growth!

Additional Information
What your student will learn this year in 6th Grade:
Math:
In Grade 6, instructional time will focus on four critical areas: (1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; (2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and (4) developing understanding of statistical thinking. Students will be using EngageNY, which should be familiar to returning USD 475 students.
Science:
Students will be utilizing Pearson online materials for their “textbook” as well as using the Schoology learning management system in their class. The curriculum begins with biology, focusing on studying the diversity of life. Unit two focuses on water and the atmosphere. Unit three includes study of the Earth’s surface, followed by a study of Chemistry. All grade levels end the year with a focus on Health and Human Sexuality. Throughout the year we will develop needed skills that are building blocks to the study of science.
Language Arts: Students will be focusing on a number of texts - determining meaning and finding evidence to support claims. Most of the year will be spent on the novels Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, and Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor. Students will demonstrate their skills and understanding in argumentative essays at the end of each unit.
Social Studies: Social Studies will focus on Ancient World History. Students will study ancient civilizations from around the world beginning with the first hunter-gatherers and ending with life during the Middle Ages (Egypt, China, Rome, Greece, etc.). Students will demonstrate their skills and understanding through writing, projects, and collaborative discussions.
Additional Courses
Academic Strategies: Academic Strategies is a regular 54 minute class students will have everyday. On Fridays, students will have time to check their grades online and email you, their parents, with an update on grades and any missing work. On Fridays, students will also learn skills such as organization and spend time learning about and practicing our Trooper PRIDE values.
Beginning a few weeks into the school year, students will be placed into a Monday - Thursday Academic Strategies class based on their academic needs. Students will receive extra practice in math, reading or writing, or be challenged through extension classes. These placements are based on testing done at the beginning of the year, as well as studnet performance from the previous year. You will receive more information about these placements during October conferences.
