Domino Effects for Vets
November 11 is Veterans Day across our country. On this important date, we commemorate the veterans who served in the U.S. forces. However, for Riviera senior Jenna Weber, this is not the sole date she helps war heroes in need. During her junior year in high school, Jenna created a charity organization called Domino Effects For Vets. Through this organization, she collects donations of supplies and necessities for our vets and fills up backpacks to deliver to the Miami Veterans Administration Hospital. From the hospital, the workers hand out the supplies to the homeless war heroes within that area. Jenna felt moved to begin this charity because of her uncle who is a veteran suffering from PTSD. She has made many appearances at certain events talking about her charity and was recently interviewed for a magazine. Because of this selfless service, she has been nominated for a Silver Knight Award. Her next charity drive is this weekend, but if you would like to lend a helping hand, you can reach out through the Instagram page @dominoeffectforvets. We are so proud to see our Bulldogs making a difference beyond our campus and into our extended community!

honor society inductions 2020
Riviera students continue to persevere through all circumstances, and they are proving it this year as they maintain their academic focus in the face of the pandemic. It is no secret that this school year has been filled with obstacles which we must learn to overcome. These last two weeks, Riviera organized four different events to honor the academic achievements of our students. New members were inducted into various honor societies including the National Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society as well as the honor societies for English, math, science, HOSA, social studies, Spanish, French, Italian, dance, music, and theater. We are extremely proud to have inducted new members into these prestigious student organizations and watch our Bulldogs continue to thrive in all their efforts.

Dia de Los Muertos
In honor of Dia de Los Muertos on Monday, November 2, Ms. Armendaris celebrated with her middle school students by reading about the holiday and watching an educational video. All students then participated in a creative flower making activity. Students made flowers out of tissue paper and pipe cleaners to put on their “ofrenda!” This is a tradition in Spanish speaking countries in which families put flowers and gifts on the altar in honor of family members who are no longer with them. Ms. Armendaris got the project idea after watching the Disney movie Coco. This movie displays families placing candles and flowers out in memory of their late family members on Dia de Los Muertos. Ms. Armendaris recalled two students who actually reached out to her privately about the movie. These students put their flowers next to their late family members’ pictures and have found a new tradition to honor their family. It is truly amazing how our Riviera teachers find a multitude of ways to incorporate different cultures into their classroom instruction.

French Week 2020
Bonjour!
Last week, November 2 - 6, Riviera hosted its second annual National French Week. The French Honor Society prepared a plethora of cultural activities for the students. French music filled the lunch room as students walked in and chose a meal from our menu of French delicacies. Students had a blast as they played trivia games consisting of questions to learn all about French culture. Students and staff enjoyed the delicious nourriture by eating french fries and croque monsieur and finishing off the day with a délicieuse chocolate mousse.

Thankful thoughts for our teachers
As we commence the holiday season, members of La Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, the Spanish National Honor Society, thought of a unique way to show their gratitude for our amazing Riviera teachers. These last two weeks, students in the honor society made thank you cards for their teachers in honor of Thanksgiving. Spanish Honor Society members were asked to write to the teachers for whom they were most grateful in order to express their appreciation. This year has brought many challenges, and our teachers have overcome all obstacles and ensured that students continue to have unique learning experiences whether in the classroom or through virtual learning. The teachers were heart-warmed and had big smiles on their faces when they received these thoughtful notes of gratitude from our Bulldogs!
