Mrs. King's 2nd Grade Class
November 20, 2015
Today was CRAZY HAT AND CRAZY SOCK DAY!!!
A Character for Thanksgiving!
An Icing Storm Hit Gingertown!!!
Gingerbread Town (a fictional community, much like Fishers) has been hit by a major icing storm and the entire town was destroyed. Using what students know about communities and economics they are being asked to rebuild the community. Students will work in small groups to recreate a business out of a shoe box, that would benefit the Gingertown community. Students will be challenged to work within a set budget to get the business up and running, all while learning about opportunity cost, scarcity, and trading! This will be a project that we will work on over the next few weeks!
Gobbler’s Jog
The Gobblers Jog 5K is right around the corner! The event runs through the
beautiful Saxony Residential and Business area. The Gobblers Jog has quickly
become an Indianapolis area favorite, and supports several area food banks.

We Are Learning...
Reading
Next week in reading we will focus on informational text. Students will learn that when reading informational text, they may need to approach their reading differently! We will discuss that the author and illustrator of an information book may be an expert and it trying to teach the reader something new! We will learn to become experts on topics and we will learn to use more than one text about a topic to learn the most we can! After Thanksgiving Break, we will be reading and comparing various gingerbread man stories! Be sure to ask your child which version was his/her favorite!
Writing
We are still busy working on opinion writing! This week we discussed how it feels to move to a new place. We thought it would be a wonderful idea for students to think of their FAVORITE place in our community, and to make a class book that we could share with any new students to our class. This will hopefully help those new students feel more comfortable and help in their transition to their new community!
Word Study
Math
We will continue our focus on addition with and without regrouping up until Thanksgiving Break! Following Thanksgiving Break, we will begin working on our math portion of our Gingertown PBL! Students will be using a variety of skills such as: measurement, addition, subtraction, fractions, perimeter, & more to help recreate Gingertown!
Math homework for Wednesday AFTER break will be 9-2 out of the math workbook!
