A Character for Thanksgiving!

This week our class began discussing Thanksgiving! We have began learning about the history of Thanksgiving, but we also discussed how many other holidays have a special character who represents the day (such as Santa Claus for Christmas, or the Easter Bunny for Easter). Thanksgiving is an important holiday, but it doesn't have a character. The students were asked how they would choose one to represent Thanksgiving, and why might having a special character be good for that holiday! The students did an amazing job! Ask your child what character their group decided on, and why! Check out the picture of the fun below!

An Icing Storm Hit Gingertown!!!

Gingerbread Town (a fictional community, much like Fishers) has been hit by a major icing storm and the entire town was destroyed. Using what students know about communities and economics they are being asked to rebuild the community. Students will work in small groups to recreate a business out of a shoe box, that would benefit the Gingertown community. Students will be challenged to work within a set budget to get the business up and running, all while learning about opportunity cost, scarcity, and trading! This will be a project that we will work on over the next few weeks!

Gobbler’s Jog

The Gobblers Jog 5K is right around the corner! The event runs through the

beautiful Saxony Residential and Business area. The Gobblers Jog has quickly

become an Indianapolis area favorite, and supports several area food banks.

More information is posted under the Royal Report heading on our webpage

AND a link was on the Royal Report email. Try the links below as well!

Start your Thanksgiving off with some fun and fitness!

Roving Reader Leaders!

Lisa Cohn (the author we skyped with recently) and her son, Michael, started a website to encourage reader leaders! This week we explored the website as a class, and listened to the book reviews that other kids have created! Ask your child what are some things that made a book review better than others!

Other exciting activities!

Decorating Gingerbread Houses!!!

We will be decorating gingerbread houses on Wednesday, December 16th from 10:45 to 11:30. A permission form and ingredient list will be sent home on soon! All parents are invited to attend! Please indicate on the permission form if you will be attending. We hope you will be able to join us for this fun event!

Icing Needed!

Each student will need their own container of white icing (any brand) to decorate their gingerbread house. You may send it in as you purchase it. Please write your child's name on the container. Thank you!

Upcoming Economics PBL opportunity!

Do you or a family member own or work at a small local business in our community? We are looking for a speaker to talk with 2nd graders about the importance of small businesses in our community! If this is something you are interested in, please let me know! Thanks in advance for your help with this project!

-Cotton balls

-Toilet paper

-Shoe boxes

Holiday Catalogs!

If you're house is anything like mine, this time of year your mailboxes get flooded with catalogs! I would LOVE to help recycle those for you and take them off your hands. Please send any catalogs in that would be appropriate for us to use in class!

Holiday gift idea!!!

During the past month, 2nd graders have had the opportunity to learn and practice skills through the use of OSMO! The 2nd grade team purchased 2 (with a 3rd on its way). If you have never heard of it, check out the link below. We have used it to help with fact fluency, to help with spelling, and for problem solving. It is an accessory that attaches to ipads. With the use of the ipads camera, it allows students to practices skills in a more engaging way! I am definitely looking into purchasing one for my own girls, so I thought I'd pass along the suggestion to you too! Visit for more info!

Math Talk

As we learn more and more math strategies and skills please remember to ask your child about them! When students talk about their learning it helps concretize the standards taught. Ask your child to walk you through the process they went through in order to find the answer! Remember...its more important students know the process to than to get the correct answer! Thanks for your help and support from home!

Mrs. Hopper is in need of donations for Makerspace in the Library! She will gladly take anything that you could use to make arts and crafts out of! Some examples would be: construction paper, markers, glue (liquid and stick), felt, duck tape, toilet paper tubes, scissors, tape, etc....basically anything that you could use to create things with your imagination!! Thanks so much for your help with this!!!

Lost Library Books!

Please make sure that you take an extra look around your house for LOST Library Books!! We know how easy it is for them to get mixed in with our own books, but we have some kiddos that are missing quite a few and not turning them in!! Don't forget to peek around your house for any that may be hiding!!!

Lost and Found

If your child is missing an item (coat, lunchbox, etc.), please remind him/her to check the lost and found table located in the cafeteria. Many lost items are piling up just waiting to be found! You may wish to label any items sent to school with your child’s name in order to make locating lost items easier.

Classroom donations!

We are looking for donations for colored index cards. If you would like to donate some please send them in with your child! Thanks in advance for your help!

We Are Learning...

Next week in reading we will focus on informational text. Students will learn that when reading informational text, they may need to approach their reading differently! We will discuss that the author and illustrator of an information book may be an expert and it trying to teach the reader something new! We will learn to become experts on topics and we will learn to use more than one text about a topic to learn the most we can! After Thanksgiving Break, we will be reading and comparing various gingerbread man stories! Be sure to ask your child which version was his/her favorite!

We are still busy working on opinion writing! This week we discussed how it feels to move to a new place. We thought it would be a wonderful idea for students to think of their FAVORITE place in our community, and to make a class book that we could share with any new students to our class. This will hopefully help those new students feel more comfortable and help in their transition to their new community!

Word Study

Word study in 2nd grade includes spelling, phonics, and vocabulary development. Starting after Thanksgiving Break, we will focus on 13 new vocabulary words for that 3 week period. Those words are: income, profit, economics, need, want, resources, tragedy, effect, design, supply, scarcity, opportunity cost, and surplus!

We will continue our focus on addition with and without regrouping up until Thanksgiving Break! Following Thanksgiving Break, we will begin working on our math portion of our Gingertown PBL! Students will be using a variety of skills such as: measurement, addition, subtraction, fractions, perimeter, & more to help recreate Gingertown!

Math homework for Wednesday AFTER break will be 9-2 out of the math workbook!

Social Studies

We are learning about Thanksgiving! We will learn about the history of the holiday, discuss family traditions, and complete our Thanksgiving Character PBL (see above for more details)!
