Number of crops ready and amount of harvest of a given crop will vary throughout the season. We will provide at least six items each week. If we have any crop issues, we will supplement with produce from other local farms. Some weeks will include value added items, such as Jungle Jam, Zucchini Bread, Fresh Basil Pesto, or even fruit we pick at "You-Pick" locations.

Tips & Recipes

Turnips

I don't know about you, but I love both turnips and history! Raw turnips make a fantastic addition to any veggie tray. They are related to radishes, mustard, and collard greens, and they're versatile - the root and the leafy greens can be eaten. They were once considered a dietary staple. Now turnips aren't usually one of the first vegetables that come to mind when planning a meal...but maybe they should be since they’re low in calories while packing plenty of vitamins and minerals. This week you are only getting one turnip, but the root and leaves can perk up a salad or add flavor to a couple of sandwiches or wraps!


Before people carved jack-o-lanterns on Halloween, they carved turnips to frighten "evil spirits" away during the Celtic holiday Samhain. In Roman times, the turnip was the weapon of choice to hurl at unpopular public figures! Some evidence shows the turnip was domesticated before the 15th century BC. Beets

Beets are high in valuable vitamins and minerals. In fact, they contain a bit of almost all the vitamins and minerals that you need!

Swiss Chard

We had Swiss Chard several weeks ago, with two recipe suggestions. Here's a new one that is very summery. We would love to know how you have used your chard!

Cabbage

What comes to mind when you think of cabbage? Coleslaw. Pigs in a Blanket. Sauerkraut. Haluski. All delicious! But here's a recipe for a shredded cabbage salad you may not have tried.

Carrots

You can eat carrot tops!!!!!

Did you know this???? I did not know this. In my 48 years,
I have never even considered that this was a thing!


From Garden Betty:

"You can eat carrot tops raw in salads, wilt them into soups, braise them with a flavorful roast, sauté the greens in a little oil and garlic with other vegetables, or stuff a few sprigs of carrot tops into sandwiches. I especially like carrot tops in a rich, meaty stew or sprinkled over lighter dishes as a garnish, the way you’d use parsley. (Carrot tops do make a decent substitute for parsley in a pinch.) The reason we don’t find carrot tops more often is because, even after they leave the ground, the leaves continue to draw moisture and energy from the root, so they’re removed to preserve the carrot. (Side note: If you grow your own carrots at home, always cut the leaves off after harvest and store them the same way you’d store salad greens.)"

Zucchini Bread

Here's a little story for you...Once upon a time, Common Ground and Goodness Grows got a new commercial range. The stove people had to come out repeatedly to get the temperature settings right. Then, one day, with great excitement, Goodness Grows baked zucchini bread to give to their good friends, the CSA people. Yay, zucchini bread! Alas, it was with great sadness that the intrepid bread bakers discovered that, in fact, the temperature issue had NOT been corrected. The lovely loaves of zucchini bread that they were so proud of were transformed into blackened bricks of misery. Luckily, Wise Princess Rachel had baked two extra loaves inside the opposite oven, where she was able to overcome the evil temperature settings. So, while our story does not end with a happily ever after, it does end with the good CSA people getting a small sample of this delicious zucchini bread as well as the promise of zucchini bread loaves to come in the future. The End.
