Classroom Reminders

Picture forms are due on Tuesday. School Picture Day for the Elementary will be on Thursday, October 15th. Fifth graders generally take their pictures last, so feel free to send along a nice shirt for them to change into if you worry they will get it dirty.

Mrs. Abi is offering an after-school program to teach the students about a 3-D printer. She won 3-D printing for our school through the Monsanto Grant. What an AWESOME experience for the students. I am so excited about this class! Please fill out and send back the forms by Tuesday as well. The first class is on Monday, October 19th.

Band students will now be required to bring their instrument to school for group band on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Please help them remember to have their instruments with them on band days, in addition to days that they have lessons if their lessons fall on a Tuesday or a Thursday.

Reading Plus

The students are off to a GREAT start with Reading Plus this year. Our goal is for every student to complete 100 lessons with a comprehension score of 80% or higher. If you take a look at the image below, you will see that 19 students in our have finished between 1-20 lessons. Six of our students have completed between 21-40 lessons already in our first few weeks. That is incredible! You will also see that our students are making gains on their fluency rate, or how fast they read. On average, the fifth grade students have already improved 21 words per minute in their silent reading. That is so cool! If your child is utilizing Reading Plus at home, keep it up. There are a lot of 5th grade students that go to the lab in the morning with Mrs. Abi to work on Reading Plus and it is really paying off! I am so anxious to see their progress as we continue this school year.

In Math this week, we explored volume (the amount of space an object takes up) by finding the volume of our classroom. The students used meter sticks to determine how many cubic meters would fill our classroom. The day before, the students built cubic meters, cubic yards, cubic feet, cubic inches, and cubic centimeters out meter & yard sticks, rulers, and grid paper. It was crazy to think that over 200 cubic meters would fit in our classroom! The students did a great job with this lesson and all worked hard in their groups to determine the volume.

Congrats to the 5th and 6th Grade Bulldog football team on an excellent season! It was so fun getting to watch them play a couple games this year. They are all very talented and have really worked hard this season!
