The Eagle's Beak
"Auburn Pride Starts Inside"
September 11, 2020
Buddy came for his first visit to Auburn this week and he was such a good puppy! You will see in the Buddy Corner below that we are dedicating our Read-a-Thon to Buddy this year. I am excited to see how many minutes the students can read for Buddy. We will have all kinds of fun prizes along the way and we might even be able to work out a socially distanced visit with Buddy for the top reader and top fundraiser!!
I want to thank those of you who attended Curriculum Night last night. I will be holding a Coffee with the Principal on Monday from 12:30-1:00, so if you have any follow up questions, please come join us. We will also have a couple of PTO updates and a PTO rep in attendance to answer any questions you may have related to the PTO.
There is a letter that is coming out to you today from Coleen Brunni regarding NWEA testing. This is an assessment that all grade levels will take this year. We will begin our testing next week for second and third grade students. Teachers will inform you of your child's specific schedule so that you are able to prepare for the testing session. We know that this is a new experience for you and we appreciate your support in getting your device prepared for the assessment.
P2 shirts are still for sale, please see the form below to purchase your new t-shirt. We will be supplying P2 shirts to all of our Kindergarten and new students. If you are a new student at Auburn, please still fill out the form with the size that you would like. The last day for payment will be on October 6th and we will be placing the shirt order on October 7th.
Have a wonderful weekend,
As you all know, our social emotional learning (SEL) dog Buddy was born in June and now our job is to raise the funds to bring him home! SEL dogs, also known as therapy dogs, are being utilized as a learning support in schools across the country with positive impact. We believe that all learning is social emotional learning, and the addition of a SEL dog will have a far-reaching impact on over 400 students a school year. Thank you for reading and raising funds for such a wonderful cause. Next year you will be able to read your books to Buddy!

Other People Mindset
You will also see us using #OtherPeopleMindset. These are the five elements intended to help people understand ways to build positive relationships in their own lives: identifying and appreciating the good in others, knowing my words and actions affect others, supporting others when they struggle, cheering others’ successes, and being present and giving others my attention.

Posture, Posture, Posture
Parents, as you setup learning stations for your children, this is so important for their attention, visual skills, and long-term health! In the picture, you can see the red arrow indicating that the student is looking down at the desk to see the laptop, resulting in the flexion of his neck. This causes strain, not only to the neck, but also to the shoulders and back. It also makes the eyes work harder. And it makes it more difficult to pay attention because the vestibular nuclei on the back of the neck are not activated to keep the brain/body alert. Instead, elevate the laptop using books or a box to eye level. This brings the neck back into a more neutral position making it easier to learn and better on long-term health! (You'll have to imagine the student looking straight forward. Excuse my remedial image-creating skills). As you can see, the student has his feet planted firmly on the floor as well. This also positively influences posture. If you don't have a chair that allows for this, place books or a box under the feet to allow for them to be planted.”
With the restrictions we are experiencing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we wanted to let you know that AHPL will not be offering any in person programming for the rest of 2020. However, our library is open for Grab & Go use of our collections as well as Curbside Delivery for those interested. The youth services department is also hard at work developing online content for our young patrons.
Also, most of what we are offering does not require a student to have an AHPL card, however all students at Avondale schools are eligible to receive an Auburn Hills Public Library student card. If any student would like to have access to our library's extensive network of collections, they may apply for a card using this online form https://www.ahplibrary.org/student-cards/ or the attached PDF application.
