The Wise Wing
May 23, 2022
Greetings, Amazing Families,
There are only 3 more weeks of schoolš. Though at many points the year has felt long, it's hard to believe that there are just over three more full weeks of school until Summer Break. As we get ready to usher in the last leg of the year, I hope that you will support your child in thinking about the changes of summer. When I was growing up, I actually had mixed emotions about summer. I was happy to have a break from school, but I also knew that meant a lot of unknowns in my daily routine. Regardless of your summer plans, please take time to talk to your children about what summer will bring.
This Wise Wing has important information in it! Please review it fully!! I hope you find some pockets of peace in your week.
Notes & Reminders
šThough our Lunch with a Loved One was rained out. You are welcome to eat lunch with your child anytime this week before EOGs begin! Please check with your child's teacher for your child's lunch time if you would like to eat lunch with your Hawk. Parent lunch dates enjoy lunch with their Hawk at the picnic tables!
āOn Wednesday, May 25, 2022, Hilburn will host the District 7 Board Advisory Council Meeting from 6:30pm to 7:30pm.
šWCPSS Transportation and Special Transportation remains short on drivers and safety assistants. If you need to make an appointment, practice, or event, please consider alternative transportation plans for that day. Yellow buses remain at least 20 minutes behind routine times in the afternoon as bus drivers run multiple routes for both Hilburn and other schools. We are so thankful for the bus drivers that we have! If you need to pick up your child using a different mode of transportation, please let your child's teacher know.
Please note the following.
-If you child is absent we will as for a note and ask for a negative Covid test (at-home, rapid, or PCR) when a child is out due to a Covid symptom (vomiting, fever, severe abnormal headache, upset stomach, severe coughing/wheezing, chills, severe stuffy nose).
**If your child has routine allergies, your doctor can write a note as an alternative.
**We understand that some of our female students experience some of these symptoms with their monthly cycles, if this relates to your child's symptoms or concern, please just let Mrs. Walker know!
Let's have a great week together in our nest!
Sincerely,
Mariah Walker

PRINCIPAL FAREWELL!
Dear Hawk Family,
As some of you may already know, last week, the School Board appointed me as principal at Wake Young Womenās Leadership Academy beginning in July. While this is a new opportunity, it does not make it any easier to think about missing you and your amazing children.
Family is not born, it is created. In every call, wave, hug, challenge, and interaction youāve become family to me. Your children and your family have a special place in my heart. Youāve allowed me to be a part of your lives and the story you are writing for your family. Through your stories and experiences, Iāve grown as a principal, teacher, and mother. As I think about how much weāve been through together, there are not enough words to effectively summarize how much our school means to me.
Weāve been through so much together. Iāve been with you as you cried leaving your kindergartner and Iāve been with you as you cried leaving celebrating your 8th grader. Through the exceptional challenges of Covid-19, weāve also found comfort in one another. Iāve been so proud of our community and how weāve supported each other in challenges.
I am already thinking about how much I will miss you and our sweet nest. I love our students deeply and I love how much we love and care about each other.
Thank you for extending your support, kindness, and love to me over these last years. The horizon is still young, we still have time to be together and bask in the joy of our Hilburn family. I hope we can enjoy the moments in front of us richly, while cherishing the moments behind us, deeply.
With love and eternal gratitude,
--What PTA events would you like to see return?
--What PTA events did you not miss?
Please take a few minutes to complete the PTA survey by 5/27!

EOG News
Virtual Students in Grades 3-8 report to school to test on the SAME days as In-Person Students!
EOGs & State Tests
Students in grades 3-8 participate in state tests, commonly called EOGs or EOCs. Review the details below to see the dates for your child's assessments.
This year, students who do not score at benchmark on their EOG will have the option to take the test a second time. You can read more about this option in the letter below. Help us plan for retesting by sharing whether or not you will have your child participate in this option!
