The Carleton Chronicle
A weekly update from Carleton Middle School.
The future of education
I had the opportunity this past week to visit Wayne State University and present to their education majors, conduct mock interviews (for current seniors), and answer questions about my journey through student teaching, teaching, and then moving into administration.
I left feeling inspired and reenergized. As a current principal, I often think about how we are going to replace our veteran teachers (nearing retirement) that have acquired years of experience, on the job scenarios that could never be anticipated in undergraduate or graduate classes, and scores of hours of collaboration with other amazing teachers. The education students at Wayne began class at 7:40pm. Every student was early, no one had their laptop or cell phone out (yet they all had them), and the students being interviewed were all dressed in business professional attire. However, the most amazing thing that occurred was that at 9:05pm (five minutes before the end of class), the professor announced that we were going to end class. Fifty-five minutes later, the entire class was still in the classroom, asking questions, seeking feedback on their resumes and cover letters, and inquiring about the profession.
The students at Wayne were student-centered, eager to learn, and wanting to impress. I have renewed confidence that the future (as well as the present) of educating young people not only at Carleton but in all schools, is in great hands.

Colts REACH for success! As we work towards having a fantastic end of the year this year and look ahead to our future, Carleton will be talking more about how our students can REACH for success by displaying the values of Resourcefulness, Engagement, Accountability, Compassion, and Having a positive attitude. It is our desire to recognize the Colt community when they exhibit these values as well as encourage our community to display these values. I want to take a moment to recognize a few instances when Colts have REACHed for success.
Mrs. Cleary used Resoucefulness to reach out to the DIA and bring the DIA Away here to Carleton so that many of our students could see and interact with new and inspiring art.
Mrs. Scheele's class demonstrated Engagement as they all read and analyzed informational text together.
A student who had made a poor choice demonstrated Accountability as they, without prompting, apologized for their decisions.
Students demonstrated Compassion by helping a sick child make his way down to the office so he could contact his parents.
100s of students Have a positive attitude as they smile, say hello, and show up in class ready to learn each day.
Keep REACHing for success colts.
Goodbye
Ms. Mulla has been with Carleton for the past several months student teaching with Ms. Juronoc. She came to use fully prepared to student teach in every aspect and has acquired an invaluable experience with our 7th and 8th graders. She will leave us today as a student teacher and will begin working in Warren Woods on Monday as a building substitute. We wish her well as she begins her teaching career!
