## Highlights From Last Week....

This week we were learning machines!

This week our class read stories about baby animals and their families. Your child discovered ways in which baby animals move, such as hopping, running, galloping, and crawling.

We learned the vocabulary words: movement, adventure, exhausted, exciting and arrived. Our sight word was "we" and we focused on the letter Aa.

In Math, we worked on decomposing numbers with totals of 4 and 5. We wrote numerals 1-5 in order. We worked with numbers 6-8. We learned how to write the numbers and use the numeral to represent a quantity.

In Science, we learned about weather patterns and severe weather.

## A peek at our learning this week...

This week will be a short but busy week of learning!

This week our class will be focusing on ways in which we use our five senses to hear, taste, touch, see, and smell. Children will read about how they can explore the world around them by using their senses.

Here are some activities you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we’ll be practicing.

Word Workout

• Vocabulary: senses, explore Write terms for each of the five senses on index cards. Invite your child to explore your home by identifying things they see, hear, taste, touch, and smell. Record their findings on the cards.
• My Words to Know

High-Frequency Word: see Write the word see on paper and have your child trace the word. Then play a game of “I See.”

Category Words: senses Ask questions about the senses. For example: What sense tells you that dinner is cooking? (smell)

Phonics: s Form an s with a piece of string. Then have your child form the letter. Look at a newspaper or magazine and ask your child to circle words that begin with the letter s. Make a list of those words and help your child read them.

In Math, we will work on decomposing numbers with totals up to 9. We will write numerals 1-9 in order. We will learn how to write the numbers and use the numeral to represent a quantity.

In Science, we will be learning about the seasons.

## No School

There will be no school on October 14th due to Columbus Day.

## Scholastic Book Orders

Your child's teacher may send home Scholastic Book Order opportunities monthly. Please do not feel obligated to order, we just feel this is a great opportunity to expand your child's library. October book orders will be due October 18th.

## Walk-a-thon

Paperwork went home last week with the details of the kindergarten walk-a-thon. Profits from the walk-a-thon will fund our field trips this year. Thank you in advance for your support.
