"We exist so children can excel."
What We're Learning in Challenge
The week has not been without interruption, but it's been purposeful and enjoyable interruption. For instance, we had to prepare for the Indianapolis Opera Company's Pinocchio opera by reading the traditional version of the story. Similarly, we did real-world writing by composing letters of appreciation to those organizations that so thoughtfully brought The Arts to the students of Mt. Carmel. Next week, we will be wrapping up The Hundred Dresses novel and working on a Readers' Theater of the same name. We are looking quite forward to our next welcomed "interruption," a visit from author/illustrator David Catrow, who we heard from on Constitution Day (Thursday) in We the Kids: A Preamble to the Constitution of the United States.
5/6 Grade
Our newest novel is rich with powerful discussion. At the same time, it offers many, many examples of similes, metaphors, and idioms. Trust me, your child is fast becoming an expert on finding these types of figurative writing in texts. I always tell them that, if we can locate exemplary words in writing, then we can also be using them in our own writing.
