Interesting Discipline Update/Data
Last year we made reducing junior high discipline issues a priority, and we were fairly successful. But as a team, we decided we wanted even more improvement. As the junior high parents know, this year we instituted a MUCH more stringent discipline policy in junior high. When introduced, it actually concerned some kiddos that they couldn't do it. But as you know, people will usually reach the expectations you put in front of them. And so far so good. Please see the data below.
As an entire school, we also made good progress. You may know, I have tracked discipline issues every quarter for 14 years. So we have a pretty good baseline on what is a good quarter and what is not so good. And this was a great quarter! One of the best ever! See the data below. Thank you to the SLS parents and staff for all the good work you do. Congratulations on a great start!
SLS Jr. High (1st Quarter Discipline Numbers)
17-18 - 282.5
18-19 - 160 (reduction of 43.4% from prior year)
19-20 - 134.5 (reduction of 15.9% from prior year)
SLS K-8 (1st Quarter Discipline Numbers)
17-18 - 354.5
18-19 - 310.5 (reduction of 12.4% from prior year)
19-20 - 218.5 (reduction of 29.4% from prior year)
For doing such an outstanding job, I want to use some of the suggestions I've received from students as a small reward. Thank you to Roman Raab, Ava Hollins, and Lucy Meyer for their ideas.

Holly Jolly Food Drive 2019
November 3rd - November 25th
St. Louis School is the largest single contributor to the Batesville Food Pantry. Without our help, a lot of families would not have enough to eat during the holidays. Last year, SLS collected over 1,200 items. NJHS has grocery carts throughout the school so drop your groceries in one of the carts and make someone's holly jolly!
NJHS Members Kate Weber, Sadie Wachsmann, Madison Wanstrath & Claire Saner are pictured below setting up for the campaign.
Powerschool Reports
They're BACK!
The weekly digest email feature from Powerschool stopped functioning last school year. We believe we have finally corrected the issue. Please feel free to go in and set this up via stlouisschool.powerschool.com if you haven't already. You can choose a weekly email that sends a summary of grades and attendance, and choose the frequency. There is also a convenient little checkbox to apply to all of your students, and you can add mom or dad in the additional email address section. This is so great and I'm glad we got it back up and running for our families. If you have any questions regarding Powerschool accounts please contact Mrs. Riedeman. jriedeman@st.louisschool.org.
Thank you,

Shout Out To Wade and Crew
This is an email I sent to staff last week: "I was walking into school this morning and of course it was mostly dark in the hallways. But the security light was on and it happened to highlight the reflection of the floors. And I was thinking, 'Wow, these floors look great!'Wade, the floors do really look amazing, even after 12 weeks of kids walking on them. Just wanted you to know that I appreciate all you do here."
This was a response from a staff member:
"Yes! Wade, you always go above and beyond. My mom also comments on our school. In all of her subbing, we are by far the cleanest school she's been in!"
Wade and crew, thank you for all you do!

Spanish Classes Celebrate Day of the Dead
Spanish classes celebrated the Latin American holiday of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Much like All Saints Day and All Souls Day, we remember our loved ones who have passed away. Colorful skeletons are a mascot of Day of the Dead, so we made many crafts that included them!

Owl Pellets
The SLS kindergarteners came to dissect owl pellets with the sixth grade students recently. The sixth grade is learning about biomes and food chains. They are also learning about owls and their food web. Students worked together to organize and identify bones. When finished with dissecting, the 6th graders will be building the full skeleton of the owl's prey.
Grant from "Pets in the Classroom"
St. Louis School Junior High Science was awarded the Pets in the Classroom grant to purchase pet supplies for the classroom. The science classroom currently has two bunnies, two guinea pigs, one chinchilla, and multiple fish. We would like to thank Pets in the Classroom. This grant helps to supply food and nutritional snacks for all of our pets. Before school and between classes, students are able to take the pets out of the cages. This pet interaction has been a positive experience for all of our students.

Kindergarten Students Experience Augmented Reality in the Classroom
St. Louis Kindergarten students recently received a grant through the Ruth and Chester Baylor Foundation to purchase a kit titled, “Letters Alive" and we are so fortunate to bring augmented reality into our classrooms. The students learn about letters, sounds and animals that correspond with the sounds. Additionally, students learn how to build sentences, create word families, and learn about science with the 3D augmented reality world filled with 26 animals. At St. Louis, students are engaged in a positive learning experience as they hear, see, touch, build and speak throughout several lessons which are extremely beneficial for our kinesthetic, visual and auditory learners. Students and kindergarten teachers already love the phonics program and get excited for each lesson waiting in anticipation to see what animal will represent each letter.

Last night the St. Louis Cardinals 5/6th grade boys hosted their first games of the season. The 6th grade boys came up short with a final score of 28-53. Scoring for SLS were Jaiden Kuria with 12pts, Caleb Mohr with 8pts, Aiden Griewe with 4pts, and both Ben Griewe and Jack Freeland getting us 2pts each. Boar’s Head Festival
FROM: BATESVILLE AREA ARTS COUNCIL
A cherished community tradition, the Boar’s Head Festival will be returning to the Sister’s Chapel in Oldenburg at 7 pm on Friday, December 6th and Saturday, December 7th, reports Batesville Area Arts Council Publicity Chair Tina Longstreth. A presentation of English traditions coming to life, the Friday and Saturday shows will act as perfect book ends for Oldenburg’s Holidays Under the Spires, to be held all day on Saturday, December 7th. “This community performance is the perfect complement to a lovely holiday event.”
This year, the festival will be presented with a few updates, according to Event Chair, Regina Siefert. “My co-chairs, Amber Cochran, Bill Rethlake and I, felt the BHF needed to be refreshed, so we dug up the original script and did a few rewrites…It didn’t flow as well as we thought it could. We are pleased with the end result and the addition of a dance component. The audience will appreciate the timeless carols sung throughout the Festival, the sing-along at the end, and the explanation of traditions from English Renaissance, some so timeless that they are still common today. And of course, the beautiful period costumes always make a splash.”
Attendees are encouraged to bring the whole family to this freewill offering event. Space is limited and seating is not reserved. The Boar’s Head Festival is great way to put you in the Christmas spirit. Music Director Bill Rethlake adds, “It's fun to be part of something so many people enjoy starting their Christmas season with… Sister's Chapel gives the Boar's Head Festival such a reverent atmosphere - I love it.”
Attendees are also invited to come early on Saturday the 7th to enjoy the many offerings at Holidays Under the Spires. This Christmas extravaganza begins with breakfast with Santa, and features specials throughout all the shops and restaurants in Oldenburg, a craft fair, horse-drawn trolley rides, and Christmas choirs and performances in the Chapel. For more information, visit holidaysunderthespires.com.
