Mustang Stampede

Third Grade news for the months of April & May

We have wrapped up our units of Geometry and also Probability. Students will be reviewing concepts from earlier in the school year over the next few weeks. Subjects we will revisit include Problem Solving (using estimation, multi-step, and choosing an operation), graphs, fractions (including on a number line), Number Patterns (In/Out Boxes), and telling time. Please continue to watch for homework on Mondays and Wednesdays. Also, we are no longer making corrections on our Math tests, we will be administering Retests for students scoring less than 75%. If you have any questions, please let me know.

We are taking a STAAR Practice test in Math for final review. The real STAAR test for math will be Tuesday, April 22. After we finish testing, our curriculum includes measurement of capacity and volume. Students will need to know appropriate capacity and volume units and be able to determine capacity and volume from a model. In class, students will use cubic units to fill 3D figures and measure liquid capacity.

We are continuing our study of living things, specifically plants and then animals in the next few weeks. We will also do a study of a specific Biome (or habitat) culminating with a research project later in the semester. Students will get information about that project later in April. Students will work in class researching a habitat, both the living and nonliving components, learning about food chains/webs present, and constructing a model of that habitat.

Reading & Language Arts & Spelling

Reading: Our classes are finishing up the fiction genre this 6 weeks. For the last part of this year, we will be doing a non-fiction research project on an animal of their choice. This will cover aspects such as habitat, location, food, shelter, etc. We are presently gearing up for the STAAR Reading test the end of April. Extra reading at home and your encouragement is always appreciated.

LA: We are finishing up the fiction genre with the chapter books they are constructing. The students are doing a phenomenal job and will be sharing those soon. For the remainder of the year, the students will work on the research-based essay concerning the animal they chose.

Spelling: We will continue the same plan to finish out the year. It seems to be working quite well with your support.

Social Studies

SS: We will move our study on basic government to after the STAAR Test. Many of our reading passages will be based in the non-fiction reading category.
