First Aid: Children
the basics
Be Prepared
Administering CPR, first aid, or AED to a child can be overwhelming and stressful, but knowing the right way to provide care and being prepared can reduce this stress, as well as ensure that you are putting the child's safety at the lowest amount of risk possible.
5 Safety Tips You Should Know:
- use disposable gloves and other personal protective equipment
- when giving care to an infant, you can check for responsiveness by flicking the bottom of the foot
- when performing CPR, if you notice obvious signs of life at any time, stop the CPR and monitor their breathing and any changed in condition
- if you are alone, provide about two minutes of care prior to calling 9-1-1
- when giving CPR, a child or infant must be on a firm, flat surface
