Principal's Message

Dear West TV families,

You've made it through 2 weeks of Comprehensive Distance Learning! The teachers appreciate all of your support and grace as they adjust schedules to best fit the needs of students.

Next week on Wednesday 9/30 there will be another pick up day. We've added an additional pick up time that day - so there will be 2 times: 9:00-10:00am and 2:30-4:00pm. We've purchased a mini-whiteboard and a Family Fun Run t-shirt for each student to pick up (some students also have other items to pick up from their teacher).

Starting on Thursday, October 1st is our All Star Reading Club - see below for more information.

Then on Friday, October 2nd we will have our first Spirit Day of the year - it will be "Hat Day".

The first Friday of each month will be a theme Spirit Day (for example: hat day - 'wear your favorite hat') - see below for a list of all of the Spirit Day themes for the year. The remaining Fridays each month we encourage students and staff to wear a West TV t-shirt or sweatshirt.

All students will be picking up a Family Fun Run t-shirt next week on Wednesday 9/30 (the PTC purchased one for every student) and if you'd like to purchase additional West TV shirts or sweatshirts, see below for ordering information.

Then on Saturday, October 3rd is The West TV All Star Family Fun Run (9-11am).

During Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL), students will be able to check out library books from our school library. Students can pick up/drop off school library books every Monday and Thursday 2:30-3:30pm beginning next week on Monday 9/28. They can also check out books from our Library Book Bus. To request a library book and learn more about the Library Book Bus, see below.

Thank you for making West TV such a wonderful community and school. Below is a video of an Alicia Keys song as performed by One Voice - it's a touching song that reminds us all that we're doing a good job - this is a challenging time not only for our school, but for our state, our country and the world...tissue warning: you may want to have a box handy.

With appreciation,

Principal Valentine

Library Books

During Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL), students can check out library books from the school library. Parents can assist with picking out the exact books and placing them on hold using the link below or the student can just show up at the school to checkout a book bundle - a variety of books bundled together grouped by reading level - we call this "curbside checkout".

every Monday 2:30-3:30pm

every Thursday 2:30-3:30pm

BSD Libraries will help you find the book of your dreams! eBooks are always available through Sora AND you can access public library eBooks as well. Destiny is the tool that helps you find books and request them at your school’s library. Helpful screencasts are included here. Check it out.

Library Book Bus

In addition to checking out books at the school, students can also check out books from the Library Book Bus that will drive through the West TV neighborhoods one day each week starting in mid-October. The bus will stop at several locations. More information to come.

All Star Reading Club

All Star Reading Club started in 2008 at West TV to encourage students to explore different genres. Each month, we highlight a different genre. Students can earn prizes, free books and even a Spring Party for participating.

October is the first month of the All Star Reading Club. The genre for October is Mystery and Horror. It's a great chance to dig into spooky stories as Halloween approaches! Take a look at the October flyer for ideas and details: October Flyer: Mystery and Horror

Social Studies

The Beaverton School District is committed to becoming an anti-racist school district — free from hatred and racism — and providing a culturally relevant, responsive and inclusive environment for all students. We recognize this work to be paramount to the success of our most vulnerable and marginalized students. As a part of this effort BSD will be launching a new social studies curriculum, not only in response to our current reality, but also due to updated social science standards which you can view here: 2018 Oregon Social Science standards. The first unit teachers will be exploring is entitled “Identity, Culture, Race and Racism, and Change Makers (K-2) or Anti-Racism and Action (3-5)”. These interdisciplinary units were created by a collaborative team of teacher-leaders. They are meant to be responsive to this current moment, this movement, our racial reality, and to the evolving scope of Social Sciences education. Teachers will be communicating with parents when they plan to begin teaching these units.

COVID19 Metrics for Reopening Schools

COVID-19 Metrics for Reopening Schools

We continue to carefully watch the county and state COVID-19 metrics in anticipation of starting hybrid learning. Numbers are released weekly. While the Beaverton School District is located in Washington County, we are linked with Multnomah County because more than 10% of our employees live in that neighboring county.

Per the Governor's guidance from July 28, the following criteria need to be met to begin the hybrid model:

  • 10 or fewer cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 people in Washington (and Multnomah) County over 7 days for 3 weeks in a row

  • Test positivity of 5% or less in Washington (and Multnomah) County over 7 days for 3 weeks in a row

  • Test positivity of 5% or less statewide over 7 days for 3 weeks in a row

The following criteria need to be met to begin the hybrid model with PreK-3 students:

  • 30 or fewer cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 people in Washington (and Multnomah) County over 7 days for 3 weeks in a row

  • Test positivity of 5% or less in Washington (and Multnomah) County over 7 days for 3 weeks in a row

  • COVID-19 is not actively spreading in the school community

Student Attendance Matters

Unlike last spring, student attendance will count during Comprehensive Distance Learning. Please read the following guidance on how attendance will be tracked:

  • Teachers will take student attendance daily. Attendance may be counted in a variety of ways to accommodate families who may need to access instruction during different times of the day.

    • Attending a live teacher-led session

    • Watching a teacher-recorded video

    • Interacting with a teacher via email

    • Posting completed coursework online

  • Parent/guardian notifications will be sent out at approximately 5 p.m. each day if students haven’t engaged in their school work and have been marked as absent.

  • Each morning, teachers will access an attendance report and will reconcile any absences from the previous day with any new evidence of engagement during the evening.
