Film Screening & Discussion: "She Started It" with Filmmaker, Insiyah Saeed '03

She Started It, is a documentary film that follows five passionate, trailblazing young women who strive to compete and thrive in the ruthlessly competitive boys' club of high tech startups.
Meet filmmaker Insiyah Saeed '03 and hear about the film's journey. Insiyah is a journalist and documentary producer with a background in storytelling and a passion for women empowerment, As an award-winning writer in print, Insiyah has been published in Huffington Post, The New York Sun, The Wall Street Journal, Women 2.0, and other tech blogs. She is a graduate of the Columbia J-School and has worked extensively in film.
Fall Institute Session: To Selma and Back

Come learn about the CIL's alternative spring break trip, "To Selma and Back" including the details for applying to participate. This experience will include stops in Memphis, Birmingham, Montgomery, Selma, Tuskegee and Nashville. Applications will open October 18th.

This documentary screening is a collaboration between MEChA and Lo Nuestro in recognition of Latinx Heritage Month.
"As seen on PBS/POV this film shares the life story of Angy Rivera who has lived in the United States with a secret that threatens to upend her life: She is undocumented. Now 24 and facing an uncertain future, Rivera becomes an activist for undocumented youth with a popular advice blog and a YouTube channel boasting more than 27,000 views. She steps out of the shadows a second time to share her story of sexual abuse, an experience all too common among undocumented women. Don't Tell Anyone (No Le Digas a Nadie) follows Rivera's remarkable journey from poverty in rural Colombia to the front page of The New York Times." --PBS/POV and Latino Public Broadcasting

Fatimah Asghar is a nationally touring poet, screenwriter, educator and performer. Her work has appeared in many journals, including POETRY Magazine, Gulf Coast, and many others. In 2011 she created a spoken word poetry group in Bosnia and Herzegovina called REFLEKS while on a Fulbright studying theater in post-genocidal countries. She is the writer and co-creator of Brown Girls, a web series that highlights friendships between women of color.
