Happy first day of classes TRIO SSP!

What a year 2020 has been! Despite the new distance we may have between us, know our staff looks forward to another great year of making TRIO memories with our students.

COVID-19 Safety on Campus

Due to the current COVID-19 Pandemic, and consistent with the State of Michigan* requirements and the WMU Safe Return plan (https://wmich.edu/safereturn), safety requirements are in place to minimize exposure to the Western Michigan University community. These guidelines apply to all in-person or hybrid classes held either inside or outside a WMU building.

Facial coverings (masks), over both the nose and mouth, are required for all students while in class, no matter the size of the space. This applies in all campus buildings. This includes outdoor class settings where social distancing is not possible (i.e., at least six feet of space between individuals). Following this recommendation can minimize the transmission of the virus, which is spread between people interacting in close proximity through speaking, coughing, or sneezing. During specified classes in which facial coverings (masks) would prevent required class elements, students may remove facial coverings (masks) with instructor permission, in accordance with the exceptions in the Facial Covering (mask) Policy** ("such as playing an instrument, acting, singing, etc.").

Facial coverings (masks) must remain in place throughout the class. Any student who removes the mandatory facial covering (mask) during class will be required to leave the classroom immediately.

Facial coverings (masks) are not a substitute for social distancing. Students shall observe current social distancing guidelines in all instructional spaces, both indoors and outdoors.

Students should avoid congregating around instructional space entrances before and after class sessions. Students should exit the instructional space immediately after the end of class to help ensure social distancing and to allow for those attending the next scheduled class session to enter.

Students who are unable to wear a facial covering (mask) for medical reasons must contact Disability Services for Students (https://wmich.edu/disabilityservices) before they attend class.

These guidelines are in place to ensure the safety of all students, faculty, and staff during the pandemic. Noncompliance is a violation of the class requirements and the Student Code of Honor (https://wmich.edu/conduct/expectations-students).

TRIO SSP staff will not be hosting ANY in person meetings or appointments this semester. If you would like to connect with a TRIO staff member, please email Nathifa.Sligh@wmich.edu or Candace.Bracey@wmich.edu or call 269-387-4440 between 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. We will be utilizing Webex until further notice to host first meetings, strengths coaching, and any other TRIO SSP business with students.

Work Center

Due to social distancing guidelines, our work center will be available on a limited basis. The hallway to the work center is locked. Students who would like to utilize the computers or printing stations in the work center will need to connect with a TRIO staff member first. Please do so by using the number listed above.

First Meetings

With much TRIO student feedback in mind, we will be combining first and second meetings for TRIO SSP this fall. In order to combine first and second meetings, TRIO SSP students will need to see their major Academic Advisor before their TRIO first meeting. We encourage you to reach out to your academic advisor now to schedule your advising for Spring 2020. This will ensure that you can complete your first meeting with TRIO SSP prior to when Spring 2020 priority registration begins on October 27.

We will share how to begin booking your semester TRIO meeting in the upcoming weeks.

We will have TRIO events this semester, although, these too will be hosted virtually. Many of our community partners that make TRIO service opportunities possible are no longer taking outside volunteers. We will still have service opportunities, we will just need to get creative about our service!

Stay tuned as we finalize the Fall 2020 programming schedule for TRIO SSP.

Hello, everyone! I am the Director for the TRiO Student Success Program. My time at WMU includes almost three years as a hall director in Henry Hall and about five years in TRiO. My favorite thing about working in TRiO is working with our students! I love seeing you all grow and accomplish your dream. My hobbies include just about anything involving art! Thanks for allowing us to be a part of your success story at WMU.

Candace Faistenhammer Bracey

I am TRIO's Program Service Specialist. I have worked for TRiO for 3 years and was also a TRIO student during my undergrad here at WMU from 2011-2015. What I love most about TRIO is supervising the Program Mentor staff and teaching our FYE2100 and UNIV1030 courses. These two pieces of my job are the most fun, as they provide an opportunity to really get to know students, their stories, and all that they want to do as Broncos." My hobbies include: kayaking, drinking coffee, shopping at target, and playing with my toddler.

Miller Auditorium, Michigan's third largest theater, presents everything from concerts, comedy acts and multimedia events to touring Broadway shows and internationally acclaimed music and dance productions.
