Dr. Ronald E. McNair ES Update
January 17, 2021
Dear McNair Families,
This newsletter finds us midway through the month of January. Our students and staff were re-energized by the Winter Break and the learning hum is evident in the virtual classrooms. We know managing the work-life balance at the same time that you are supporting your students with virtual learning continues to be a great demand for many of you. We thank you and appreciate your continued support of your student and collaboration with the classroom teacher. Just a reminder that our survey seeking your input on virtual learning at McNair closes this evening. The link to the survey can be found in the body of the newsletter.
On Tuesday, January 12, the Board of Education voted to delay the start of returning small groups of students for in-person instruction from February 1, 2021 to March 15, 2021, on the condition that health metrics are met or health guidance is adjusted as a result of vaccine distribution. The COVID-19 new case rate and test positivity in the county remain significantly above the thresholds adopted by the county and state. Read the message here. The Board will meet again on Feb. 23, 2021, to determine if metrics can be met by March 15 for a safe return to in-person learning.
Tomorrow, Monday, January 18 is no school for students and staff in honor of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. This is an official day of service and celebrates the civil rights leader’s life and legacy. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was best known for his work on racial equality and ending racial segregation in the United States. We encourage you to view this as more than just a three day weekend, but as a day of service. With the various events of the past several months and last week, we urge you to reflect on how you serve as a role model to your child(ren) for embracing, honoring, and valuing others who are different from you. Think about ways you can promote service opportunities and acts of kindness. In the words of Dr. King, "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." Not to sound cliche, but what the world needs right now is love and it starts with you. MCPS recognizes the MLK Week of Service; which is being held from Saturday, January 16 through Sunday, January 24. In the body of this newsletter is information on an MCPS virtual program in honor of MLK Day.
We are pleased that we will host our 6th annual McNair STEM Expo! This event is open to all McNair students. Please review the body of the newsletter for more details. The interest form is due by Friday, January 22 in order to participate.
The end of January is also the end of the second quarter. As such, there are two important dates to note. January 27 is our next materials distribution day for Quarter 3. January 29 is no school for students as it is a professional day for staff.
As a reminder, our front office is open by appointment only. Please remember to call ahead to make an appointment to come in to the building. This will assist us with ensuring that we are adhering to social distancing guidelines.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email both Mrs. Moses (Sherilyn_R_Moses@mcpsmd.org) and Mr. Aleshevich (Randy_C_Aleshevich@mcpsmd.org).
Sincerely,
Mrs. Sherilyn Moses, Principal
&
Mr. Randy Aleshevich, Assistant Principal

Towson COETUtors Program
EDIT STILL NEEDED
Towson is offering a free tutoring program this semester to support our PDS partnerships, the COETUtors Program. I want to extend this invitation to the families of the students in your Pre-primary class. As a partnership, we hope that the interns involved in this tutoring program will have an opportunity to work with some of these students again when they begin their primary internship in Fall 2021. In essence, continuing the pattern we have established with our PDS partnerships in the past.
Attached you will find a flyer about the COE TUtors Program (English version and Spanish version) for you to share with your parents. Please note that this program is through Towson and will be an established partnership with families outside of the MCPS school day.

Join the PTA!
Welcome new and returning families to the RMES 2020-2021 School Year!
While this semester is going to be different, the RMES PTA has the same mission – to support and connect our students, families, and staff.
Traditionally, the PTA hosts fun and educational events, sponsors programs and assemblies, and provides support for teachers and staff. Even though we cannot be together to do these things now, we will look for other ways to unite our community.
The PTA is working hard to serve the RMES community, but we need your help. Join the PTA!
If you have any questions about membership, please contact Kristen Elkin at rmesmembershipvp@gmail.com.
Thank you for your support. We look forward to navigating this school year together!

MCPS Parent Academy TO GO
As our school district continues to navigate through the COVID-19 public health emergency, we want our families and students to remain engaged throughout the school year. While we may not be able to meet face-to-face, Student, Family and School Services is very excited to launch "Parent Academy TO GO," a series of virtual workshops for families to view at home.

Technology Resources
Just a reminder, MCPS has updated their technical support information.
If your family requires technical support, you should contact the MCPS Community Help Desk by phone (240-740-7020) or
by email (CommunityTechSupport@mcpsmd.org).
Live Virtual Lesson Absence Form
Students are expected to attend all live virtual learning classes in which they are enrolled. However, in some instances, this may not be possible due to illness or extenuating circumstances. Students may then access the recording of the class to engage in the daily learning during an alternate time within 72 hours of the absence.
Students/Parents/Guardians should email their classroom teacher and Mrs. Laura Mosquera (Laura_B_Mosquera@mcpsmd.org) to communicate the illness or extenuating circumstances.
Students/Parents/Guardians may then submit a Live Virtual Lesson Absence Form to document that they engaged in the lesson and to request the unexcused absence to be reconciled to Present.
The Live Virtual Lesson Absence Form must be completed for each documented absence.
