Electromagnetic Waves
By Grant Collier
Which kind of disturbance creates an EM waves?
EM waves are produced by vibration that have an electric charge. These vibrations and the waves they create both have electric and magnetic components to it. Without these vibrations, EM waves could not exist.
Comparing EM and mechanical waves.
EM waves and mechanical waves are very different. First of all, mechanical waves need a medium to exist and EM waves don't need a medium. Second, EM waves have a much higher range of frequency than mechanical waves.
Different Ranges of the EM spectrum with each kind of radiation
Radio waves
Radio waves are used to transmit the news to radios from radio towers. They are also used for sending out signals in the form of radar.
microwaves
Microwaves are used to heat up and cook many types of food. They are also used in mobile phones, and it helps us use wifi.
infrared
Infrared lights can be used to keep food warm in some fast food restaurants. They are also used in TV remotes to help transmit what you click to the TV.
Visible light
Visible light is the only kind of light that we can see, so we won't be able to see anything without visible light.
ultraviolet
Ultraviolet light tans our skin and gives us skin cancer. It also makes up some colors of the rainbow.
X - ray
X-ray waves allow us to see our bones through our flesh. X-ray waves are also in X-ray binoculars which allow you to see through things.
Gamma Ray
Gamma waves are given off by stars which allow us to see stars from far away. Gamma rays can kill cells, so gamma waves are used to kill cancer cells.
