English Language Arts - Mrs. Coble
We will be using Canvas more in ELA. If you need to know how to receive Canvas notifications please let me know. I can forward simple directions to you via email. You can see information about your child's assignments and quizzes.
This week in Writing we are continuing our research on Immigration. The students spent time researching using books and the internet. We learned new way to search on the internet and learned about new website that give us much needed information. Their rough drafts will be due on Thursday, February 11, 2016. All of this work is done in class. Please ask your child about their research, notes, and writing.
I have met with each student in the past two weeks. We have conferenced about their reading, writing, and their goals. Please continue to support your child by signing their agenda and confirming that they have read for 30 minutes. I have seen tremendous reading confidence and growth.
Social Studies and Science - Mrs. Hubbard
We had an exciting, and FULL, week this week. Students are preparing for a Science and Social Studies test this coming week. The Social Studies test is on Tuesday, Feb. 9th and the Science test is on Wednesday, Feb. 10. Students received their study guides on Wednesday and are on their iPads in the Pages app. Day users have been given paper copies to study. We will move on to landforms in Science and into the Great Depression in Social Studies.
Information and permission slips will be coming home in this week’s Wednesday folders about our upcoming field trip to Capers Island on March 18th. The cost will be $15. Please looks for the papers in your child’s folder.
Just a reminder- we send home folders every Wednesday with important notes and graded papers. You may have noticed that graded papers are coming home all stapled altogether instead of in three separate stacks for each teacher. This should make it easier for you to see all papers that have been graded and only requires one signature instead of three. Each week there should be graded papers from at least one class, so please be sure to look for these papers and sign the slip on top. Wednesday folders needs to be returned by Friday. Thank you so much!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Math - Mrs. Harris
In math this week, the “rubber met the road” as we often say when life gets tough. DIVISION! While we all agreed that no one truly enjoys division and there is very little about the process that is easy, students put on their thinking caps and worked so hard! SC math standards require students to divide a three or four digit number by a double digit number. WOW! Flash backs to grade school, right? Luckily now, we have four methods students can try and use the one that is easiest for them. This means your child is probably not dividing like you learned how to. Don’t worry. As long as they can follow their procedure and explain their work, they are learning. If they cannot, please let me know. I will gladly help them. All students have been partnered or grouped with others that divide like them so that they can support each other. As we move into next week we will start learning what to do with remainder and then how to divide decimals. I cannot tell you how proud I am of the work students are doing.
Also, today all classes helped to reorganize their math materials. We are striving to synergies and keep our materials organized. With 60 plus students sharing one room, we must all remember that we are a team. If you find soon that your child is loosing more icons than in the past, it is likely due to not keeping up with their math materials (pencil, workbooks, and notebook). Please encourage your child to be proactive and put up their materials daily. Students do not need to bring a pencil to math as they have been assigned a pencil with their name on it. We could use donations of cap erasers as we continue to grow our brains.
Thank You!!
