Longleaf School of the Arts will commemorate 9/11 by placing flags on campus alongside local firefighters in memory of those who tragically lost their lives on that day. Mr. Glenn Pangelinan, LSA History Teacher and Military Veteran, organized the flag staging event and had this to say:
"I have been to many places in the world and learned that we have our faults. However, I would choose no other country to be a part of, even if I could. This country is the biggest supporter on a global scale of human rights. It’s hard to be a leader, taking the first steps to equality and justice for the many. This goes beyond what anyone else in the world is doing. Remembering people who serve, to support and protect these freedoms and remembering the fallen is important to our prosperity as a country. Life, liberty, and our pursuits to happiness are defended by the few and there will always be people in this world that will attempt to destroy it. Some of them tried on September 11, 2001, and I want to share it with students at LSA who were not around when it happened. It is important to show unity and understanding and love when we all need it. This day means a lot to me personally.”
Mr. Pangelinan will honor one of the firefighters, who is from New York City, by giving him a Navy SEAL Team deployment patch and a SEAL Team TWO coin.

COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS REQUIREMENT
All students must complete a total of ten (10) community service hours for each year they are enrolled at Longleaf School of the Arts. LSA defines community service as service that gives back to outside communities (i.e, serving meals at the Raleigh Rescue Mission, serving a teacher in a local school, etc.).
Students who complete their service through any non-profit organization do not need prior approval. Students who plan to complete community service hours outside of a non-profit organization should seek prior approval from the Dean of Students or their Grade Level Counselor to ensure that their proposed service hours will be accepted toward graduation requirements. If the Dean of Students or Counselor does not have a clear idea of whether those hours will be accepted, the question will go to a three-member committee consisting of the student’s Counselor, Class Advisor, and Head of School.
Service hours must be documented on the Community Service form found on the school website (here) and SUBMITTED DIGITALLY via the Google Form at this link: https://forms.gle/tHipGaQC9LVsvHQ9A. They will no longer be accepted in any other format. (Hours already turned in via email or physical copy will be processed as is and do not require resubmission.)

A Note on Attendance
School attendance will always be of significant priority here at Longleaf School of the Arts. Not only is school attendance mandated by law, but we pride ourselves on being able to help our students prepare for college and the outside world through our 16-day force failure policy, which states that "in order for a student to receive credit for a class at Longleaf School of the Arts, the student must not be marked absent for more than sixteen (16) days per year." Please be aware that the school will send home letters for all documented absences, whether excused or otherwise noted. While we understand that circumstances beyond our control occur, we ask that you provide documentation to support any absences your student may have throughout the school year. All absences can be reported on the school website through the following link: REPORT AN ABSENCE. If you have any questions about attendance or the forced failure policy, please contact Mrs. Victoria Jones, LSA's school social worker.
