No Breach - We ALL Teach
Unfortunately, technology is only a platform through which we can share information. The real work is still in front of us, and the technology cannot do the important part. We have to encourage our students to stay engaged and finish the mission. This is the new challenge.
When we are on campus, our students have routines. They conform to the culture. They are Pirates on the Pirate Ship. Now they are on dinghies , life boats, or rafts. They are not in their same surroundings, so they may not feel the same confidence, the same expectations, the same drive. They may not even feel safe. You always made them feel these things. Your presence reassured them each day. You reassured each other each day.
When this started, some thought, "This might work. No dress code checks, no bathroom checks, no duty rotations, no monitoring halls, no class distractions. This might be easier in the long run." That's not the case. What we are doing is harder. Now we (and if they are honest, the students) can recognize that structure makes a huge difference. The great majority conform to the expectations and follow rules that are enforced consistently. Now the structure has been disrupted; the consistency is gone. I am not aware of a technology that replaces that.
So more is being asked of us. We have always stood in the gap for kids. Now the gap is wider, so the challenge is greater. But I believe our team can get it done. It will take the whole team.
As a historical reference, Nehemiah, when realizing the vulnerability of Jerusalem, gathered all all of the people and set out to build a wall around Jerusalem to protect the people. Each group worked to restore different sections of the wall. When the enemy became aware, the people rotated between building and standing guard. The wall was built and the people were safe, because EVERYONE did their part. Any breach, and the whole city was at risk.
Stand in YOUR gap! Build YOUR part of the wall. If you need help, ask. If you can help others, volunteer. Pass High is our city. Confusion and complacency is our enemy. Build the wall. Protect the people. No breaches!
