Mrs. Nelson's 1st Grade News!
Week of Monday, April 22nd
This year is just FLYING by!
I can't believe we are in the home stretch already.... it seems like just yesterday we were beginning the year! Your babies have grown so much this year and that makes my heart so so very happy. :)
This week we WILL be having a spelling test. The spelling test will be on Friday. We will be learning all about the sound that ow and ou make as in cow and shout. We do A LOT of practice each day here in school as well! I have detailed the spelling below. Words are already up on spellingcity.com. This week I am going to continue to have the 2 spelling lists on spellingcity.com. There is one list for the skill words (ar and or) and one list for just the sight words.
Below you will find some important reminders for this week and some that are more staple constants, please look through this to make sure you are up to date on everything!
I hope you have a wonderful week, and feel free to contact me should you have any questions or concerns.

General Important Reminders/Updates!
- Fast Passes: You have likely been seeing these come home on colored half sheets of paper. This is something new that the district is doing in order to further enhance campus safety. If you plan on attending any of the events coming up here at the end of the year, please fill out these fast passes so we can get your badge printed for you. If you turn in a fast pass, I am sending it back home, with the badge attached, as soon as I get it back from the office. Please keep this in a safe place until the date of the event! :)
- Book Buffet: Please see the note below for more detailed information, but I wanted to go ahead and note that I am still missing quite a few forms. If at all possible, please plan on attending this for your child... they work really hard on it and it is a very special 1st grade event to celebrate how far they have come in learning to read!
- Boom Cards: Your kiddos may have told you about this math resource I purchased, but if not... ask them about it! It is a great resource and the kiddos seem to love using it to practice our math skills. I sent home a letter with your child's login before the break, but they should also know it. Visit boomlearning.com and have them login for some extra at home math practice!
- Spelling: *Please look in your child's folder this evening for a half sheet of paper with this week's spelling and sight words. We will be focusing on words with the spelling pattern ou and ow. Please do not forget about spellingcity.com, which is a great resource to use. I have already loaded this week's words on there so they are ready to go! We will be working with both the sight words and the spelling pattern a TON in class all week as well, so Friday should be a breeze! *See below for an additional copy of the spelling words!
- Sight Words: Please continue to practice any sight words your kiddos are still struggling with. Go back to weeks we have already done and quiz them to make sure they are still aware of the words and easily able to at least read them, hopefully spell them as well. Knowing sight words is essential for your child's reading success, so your help at home is much appreciated!
- Spelling/Homework: As a reminder, you do not have to turn in any actual spelling homework, you will simply study the words at home with your child. As far as reading, students are expected to read 100 minutes per week. This can be recorded in the reading log located in their "take home folder". I will check it each Friday.
Note About Reading Log:
Please remember 100 reading minutes per week. Thank you for your support in your child becoming an amazing reader. Baggy Books have been sent home and your child should be bringing a book on their level home daily. They are asked to change out their book every morning as soon as they arrive. If your child is continuing to bring the same book home each day, please remind them to change it out in the morning. As for reading at home, remember any kind of reading counts, even RAZ kids! :) *I will not be placing a new reading log in your child's folder. I am counting on you to keep up the good work reading at home! :)
- Folders: Please sign and return "Take Home Folders" nightly. This helps me monitor that everything is coming home nightly, etc. and if very beneficial as a communication tool.
- Bus Tags: If your child rides a bus, please make sure they have their bus tag daily! The bus driver will NOT let them on the bus in the afternoon without one, and you can imagine how difficult it can be to be making replacement badges at the end of the day. :)
- Changes in transportation: If you have to make a change in the way your child goes home, please make sure to inform me before the end of the day. Note that changes requested after 2:30PM are not guaranteed as there is simply not enough time to make sure that everyone is notified and the proper changes occur. Also, please remember that there are days that I may be out, so please send an e-mail, etc. as soon as possible so I can make sure everything is taken care of! If you have a last minute change, please call the office to ensure that I get the message. **This also goes for if I do not respond to you, as I may not be at school that day for some reason. We are trying our very best to make sure transportation is as safe and efficient as possible so we will need any changes to transportation in writing.
-Library: We go to the library on Monday's, please help your child remember to return their book that day. It is often helpful is library books are kept in your child's backpack after reading them at home so they always have them! :)
