Helping Hands Needs Your Help!
Blackburn Elementary is doing a Holiday project called Helping Hands. This project helps out specific families and children within our school. The 4th grade is collecting items for six children. A letter (on green paper) was sent home with all students giving specific sizes and interests of the children we will be helping. We ask that all items be sent into school by Monday, December 10th. Please help us with this as many families rely on these donations for their children.
We have found that this project is highly successful at Blackburn and we appreciate any donations.
Here is a link to the 4th Grade Letter for Helping Hands.
Blackburn Elementary PTO Holiday Shop
We are in need of a few volunteers to help keep the shop open during the day. This is fun for the students!!
Shop hours are from 10 am to 2 pm Monday 12/10 thru Thursday 12/13 AND Thursday night Dec 13 6:30-8 (program night).
Thank you for your help & support of our PTO!
What Will We Be Learning This Week?
Math
We will continue our study Cluster 4 next week: Develop Multiplication and Division Strategies.
Long Division (as always) has turned out to be a difficult skill to learn for many students. We will continue to practice next week. I have found that the traditional algorithm is working best for most students, so we are sticking to that. This is the method that most of us learned in elementary school. There will be a few word problems in next week's homework that will require long division. I will support students with these problems as they learn this new skill.
Science
This week, we did an experiment with magnets showing how ancient Egyptians and Romans used magnets in art. Students also learned that they can create 'forced magnetism' where they can make some steel objects temporary magnets. Students are learning to record their observations and conclusions when conducting experiments.
