A Message From the Principal
Dear Parents,
Imagine what that culminating experience of bikkurim felt like the first time. B’nei Yisrael went from slavery to freedom to seeing the ultimate promise of living in the land of Israel become a reality, and here they are bringing bikkurim, the first fruits, the pinnacle of their extraordinary journey.
When B’nei Yisrael bring bikkurim they declare:
My father was a wandering Aramean, and he went down into Egypt and lived there, few in number, there becoming a great nation, powerful and numerous. But the Egyptians ill-treated us and made us suffer, subjecting us to harsh labor. Then we cried out to the Lord, the God of our ancestors, and the Lord heard our voice and saw our misery, toil and oppression. So the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with great terror and with signs and wonders. (Deut. 26: 5-8)
B’nei Yisrael needed to pause and remember that this celebration, this important moment, was inextricably linked to their arduous journey. They began as slaves, they were liberated, they witnessed miracles, and they traveled through a desert. They experienced moments of doubt and despair, they committed grave transgressions, they learned the entire Torah, they collaborated to build a mishkan and become a nation, and they built a society. Now here they are, having entered Israel and settled there, bringing their first fruits.
Culminating experiences are important in learning. We need to celebrate our achievements and acknowledge what we accomplished. We also need to use those moments to make sure that our children note the process by which it all happened.
We are beginning something at KYLS that we call “Project Block.” This is a time when we work together as a classroom community on an authentic and real-world learning experience. This experience will ultimately have a culmination, something students are working towards creating in committees and as a group. That culmination will be exciting for them and motivating to them. However, what will make that culmination most powerful will be the reflection that happens during and after the learning process, where students will talk about their growth, experiences, frustrations, and plans. When they arrive at that point and complete their project, they will truly appreciate and feel that special reward of the project being the culmination of their exciting journey as learners.
Learning is often laborious, can often feel miraculous, collaborative, and has many positive and frustrating moments. By taking the time to reflect on the process, to understand and articulate our journey as learners, we can appreciate that culmination tenfold just as B’nei Yisrael did when bringing bikkurim.
Shabbat Shalom!
