Garden Road Parent Weekly #21
A Leader In Me School - 1/6/23
Dear Parents:
We are so proud to be a Leader in Me School! One of our newest additions to the Leader in Me portfolio, is our Student Leadership Team! These 5th grade students got into sub teams based on their passions, interests, and strengths while continuing to work as one to support all areas within our realm of responsibility. The sub teams and their current/ongoing projects are as follows:
- Friday Flag Captains: Responsible for planning, scripting, and execution of Friday Flag Ceremonies. All SLT participate in each Friday Flag, but other 5th graders are invited to participate based on their related passions and interests as well.
- Philanthropy Captains: Currently narrowing down philanthropic causes for the school to sponsor. They have narrowed it down to a food bank for kindness week (and would like for it to continue year long), as well as a student store that will be managed and staffed by students to raise money for local charities in need.
- Announcement Captains: Contribute to, and plan daily announcements, and schedule volunteers for variety of student voice.
- Spirit Days/Special Events Captains: Collect data on students interests and plan student events/spirit days and special events to promote a positive campus culture.
- Student Representative Captain: Is the SLT liaison for GRES staff and their respective student representatives. Plans, coordinates, and is the point of contact for meetings and assisting reps based on grade level need.
- WIG/Leader In Me Captains: This team is responsible for keeping our students informed and up to date with campus progress toward goals. Acts as an SLT liaison for the data collection team in Mr. Martinez's class.
All SLT members act as a positive role model that conducts themselves in a respectful and responsible manner. They promote school spirit and motivate others to be a part of our school wide mission. They also act as ambassadors as needed to incoming students, and visitors alike. Stay tuned for more information coming from your SLT!
At Garden Road, we are empowered learners, who lead ourselves and others, to contribute to a better world.

In the Library
Happy New Year! We started this new year with a wonderful read-aloud, using background music & sound effects. The older grades learned a new perspective on the after story of Humpty Dumpty. We all know that he fell, but then what happened? The story shows how he dealt with anxiety and eventually faced his fear of heights. Author Dan Santat gave a memorable ending to the story.
Younger grades read a funny book called Duck!Rabbit! This is a clever take on the age-old optical illusion: is it a duck or a rabbit? Depends on how you look at it! Our little readers found more than just Amy Krouse Rosenthal's signature humor here; there was also a subtle lesson for kids who don't know when to let go of an argument.
