October 2022
A message from Ms. Alexander, Principal
FALL CONFERENCES ARE COMING SOON!!
Wednesday, October 26th (Evening) and Friday, October 28th (All day)
Conferences provide an opportunity for teachers and families to meet to discuss student progress over the first few months of school. Your participation is essential, as you are truly your child's first teacher and you know them best!
In order to share work samples and other evidence of your child's progress, we will return to face-to-face meetings at Broad Street as the preferred delivery model; virtual meetings via Zoom can be accommodated if necessary. Either way, we appreciate your time. Please understand teachers can only schedule one conference per family, but the conference can be a combination of face-to-face and virtual participation if needed.
Also, in addition to meeting with your child's regular education teacher consider setting up a time to meet with the Fine and Applied Arts teachers (Music, PE, Art, Library). These educators have valuable insights about students beyond the classroom setting and can be a good resource for additional information about your child.

Walk to School Day - Wednesday, October 5
Walk to School Day is an annual tradition here at Broad Street. This year, in addition to celebrating Walk to School Day, we are hoping to promote overall health and wellness through our planned activities.
This year's celebration will include:
- Chalk the Walk - Families are encouraged to decorate their sidewalks with drawings and/or encouraging messages. Alternately, you can join the PTO to chalk the Broad Street sidewalks on Tues, Oct 4 from 5:30-6:30 (we will have chalk onsite).
- Spirit Day - Students are encouraged to show their school spirit by wearing their Mechanicsburg Strong t-shirts, maroon & steel, or other Wildcat apparel.
- Obstacle Course - Students will be able to enjoy a chalk obstacle course on the playground during recess.
- Crossing Guard Appreciation - Students will make cards of appreciation for the crossing guards.

Simpson Library Fall Card Drive
Broad Street is participating in the Simpson Library’s fall library card drive. If you would like for your child to have a library card to access resources from our local library (located at 16 W Walnut Street) you can fill out the form that will come home in the near future and have your child return it to school. Thank you!
Counseling Corner with Mrs. Bertsch
October is National Bullying Prevention Month. This makes it the perfect time to help kids learn about what bullying is, the types of bullying, and how they can stand up for themselves and others. October 19th is Unity Day, all staff and students are encouraged to dress in ORANGE. This year, students will pledge to be kind by making a leaf with their hand to add to the school-wide kindness tree. The guidance lessons this month will focus on building bridges to promote inclusivity.
Here are some great resources on bullying:

From the Nurse's Office - Mrs. Henson & Mrs. DeWitt
Your school nurses are here to help students stay healthy, safe, and ready to learn! As we head into cold and flu season, remember that handwashing with soap and water is still the number one way to prevent the spread of germs. Please refer to the district’s daily health monitoring checklist for when to keep students home.
In addition, as a reminder, all 3rd grade students are required by law to see a dentist. Good oral hygiene can help improve overall health, avoid unwanted cavities, and tooth pain. Please send in a dental form from your child’s most recent dental exam to the school nurse. If you need help obtaining a dentist, please reach out to the school nurses.
