Kudos From A Parent

In August, we let go of those items which were keeping us from doing our very best for students and focused on bringing the passion back to our classrooms. To that end, I received an email this past Friday from a parent recognizing our recent efforts to increase students who feel welcome and respected at Stoneleigh. I thought now everyone might need a pick me up and a reminder NOT to let that 5% take control. I did not ask the parent if I could share, so I have removed their name.


Hi Mrs. Hollenbeck,

I just finished reading the monthly newsletter and I had to take a minute to commend all that has been initiated at Stoneleigh. I love how part of your effort is going into strengthening the climate at school and making every student feel welcomed and valued. I know that this may be BCPS driven, but I appreciate the way it has been implemented at Stoneleigh specifically. I also am so pleased with the various new ideas and organizations.

Thanks for all that is being done at Stoneleigh for our children!

Informal and Formal Observation Evidence

Throughout the months of August, September, and October the administration has noted lesson objectives displayed within classrooms in easily read fonts, locations accessible during instruction, and unpacked with precision of vocabulary and connection to prior knowledge. Presenting the lesson objective in this manner allows students to use existing structure in order to assimilate new information.


As we move forward looking for all possible instructional times to provide students with the opportunity to read, think, and talk the unpacking of the objective provides an quick opportunity to do it all. Ms. Fisher, Ms. Zawodny, Mr. Lane, and Mr. Berkey have developed the objective by:

- requiring students to read the objective independently,

- directing students to "Turn and Talk" or "Talk to a Neighbor" to put the objective into

their own words.

- discussing the objective words which the student selected a synonym for and why they

chose that particular word.

- questioning students to reinforce or teach vocabulary.


By expecting students to read and understand the objective independently, so that it can be placed in their own words, it shows confidence in student ability. Without high expectations being conveyed from teachers students will never reach for the high bar.

Special Education Reminders presented by Stephen Cowles August 2015

  • There is no "I" in "TEAM" Teachers, Special Educators, Instructional Assistants, nor Administrators may decide to stop or change any decisions made at team for any reason without having a team meeting. This includes all teams (SST, 504, IEP)
  • Limit or do not use educational jargon with parents or in reports
  • A 504 is not a special education plan it increases access to a student’s education
  • Teacher reports and student work samples are part of the 5-day rule
  • ALL teachers must be able to communicate about how the IEP is being implemented
  • Know specific responsibilities, accommodations. goals and objectives
  • RTI (response to intervention) does not mean the child needs special education
  • Define preferential seating and extended time
