Sorrick Family Focus

Week of December 3, 2018

Weekly Update

Dear Families,

We are excited to begin sharing our weekly Family Focus updates with you! Each week, these updates will be filled with timely information about school-wide and specific grade-level events. You will also see some fantastic photos of our students in action with the latest Tweets from our classrooms! We hope that these newsletters will foster a deeper home and school connection. Thank you for taking the time to read these updates!

NWEA MAP Testing

Monday begins the Winter administration of the NWEA MAP assessment. This online assessment, which was also administered in the Fall, measures growth and achievement in reading and math. We administer the NWEA MAP assessment to our kindergarten and first-grade students three times a year in order to continue monitoring their progress in these academic areas. At the end of testing, you will receive a report with your child's results. You can help at home by making sure your child is well rested and encouraging him or her to take their time on the test. Thank you for your continued support!

On Tuesday, there will be a Parent Teacher Association (PTA) meeting at 9:15 AM. If you haven't already, please consider joining our PTA. Being a member of the PTA allows you to connect with other parents in the school and have a voice in the programs/activities that are sponsored. If you are interested in joining the PTA, please contact Heather Spaulding by emailing Please note that Popcorn Day and Birthday Books will be on Thursday, December 6th instead of Friday this week to accommodate the setup of Holiday Shop on the 7th.

Sorrick School is in the Spirit of Giving!

Over the next few weeks, Sorrick School will have two collections to support families in need. This year, Sorrick is teaming up with Scholastic Book Clubs for the Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive. Between December 3rd - 14th, we will be collecting pajama donations to provide for families in need. The pajamas donated must be brand-new, complete sets and can be in any size from newborn to adult. The pajamas donated can also be appropriate for any season. For every pair of pajamas donated to Sorrick School, Scholastic Book Clubs will donate a new book to a child in need! Click here for more information about the Scholastic Great Bedtime Story.

Sorrick School will also be supporting the 5th Annual Toy Drive to give back to kids in the hospital and military families in need. The Toy Drive was started by Jaiden Henry, a Glen Oaks student, who dedicates his time and efforts during the holiday season bring smiles to kids in need. A collection box will be in the Sorrick office for those who wish to donate! For more information, visit and

The Illinois 5Essentials Survey for parents will be available until February 15, 2019. This survey is to be completed by parents, guardians, or other caregivers with a child in grades pre-kindergarten through 12. The parent survey is available in both English and Spanish, and only takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. To take the survey please visit and select the appropriate survey to begin.
