4AB Math Class
With Ms. Ramsey 04-21-17
Dear families,
If you have not been in FSAPS recently, you should check out the bulletin board outside my classroom to see your child's amazing Geometry Town! We worked on this cumulative project of skills from Chapter 9-11 for the past week! I was blown away by their effort and construction. We ended this week with a touch into symmetry. Next week we will continue with symmetry and get into tessellations.
Each class I begin with a "spiral review" question. This allows for me to touch on the skills we have learned throughout the year. Check your child's take home folder tonight for an OPTIONAL review packet in preparation for upcoming MAP testing. MAP math scores are broken down into 4 main categories:
1. Numbers and Operations
2. Operations and Algebraic Thinking
3. Measurement and Data
4. Geometry
This packet is just oneway to help your child prepare. You may also find Study Island or other online resources if you'd like. I would not encourage your child to complete the entire packet. I would look at their winter MAP scores through FSA connect and see which area(s) were their strengths and weaknesses. This can serve as a guide for which skills the could practice or skip over!
The review packet is a rather large and the basic operations are repetitive (adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing). Of these skills dividing is the one I would recommend needs the most attention. Many students tend to make errors in the steps of long division. The concept of dividing such large numbers is hard for such young student to understand, which is why many procedural errors occur. I have taught them the "How McDonalds Sells Cheese Burger" strategy, so if you want to continue with that at home, that will help!
Many students also tend to make errors in multi-digit multiplication even though they understand the concept. They make errors in one digit by one-digit multiplication or addition errors. I have encouraged them to solve the problem two ways and to always check their work, so encourage them to do the same!
Next week, there will be a small quiz over content in Chapters 9, 10, 11, and 13. I have planned a cumulative Geometry Test to be held on May 11th. This is when we will have concluded all Geometry skills and have time to review. I will not give a test during elementary MAP testing dates as per FSAPS policy. If you need anything, please feel free to email me :)
All my love,
Ms. Ramsey
