Kids Column Chat
By: Kate Norrod, Lizzie Kwiatkowski, Kim McKenzie, and Allison Aleman
This fall we finished construction on our school. Now, as we approach summer, we are all looking forward to the warmer weather. It’s been cold lately, but we hope the temperature rises soon! Hopefully we get a higher temperature average! Just a short week ago, it was freezing! But May’s first week is supposed to be around 80°F! With our warm-ish weather came testing. This was our second round of ISTEP. Our school has rocked the ISTEP for years, and we are sure that success will continue! The third, fourth, and fifth graders did a tip-top job!
On Saturday, April 28th, we had the CANstruction competition and Spring Into the @rts Festival happening . In CANstruction, our school’s team: (Kate Norrod, Kim MacKenzie, Claire Burns, Thomas Krueger, Lizzie Kwiatkowski, Rita Piech, Kaitie Shideler, Micah Snider, David Vorkapich, and Virginia Witvoet) has constructed a sculpture of bacon and eggs in a pan. We used over 300 cans! The Spring Into the @rts Festival features artwork of students in Valparaiso of all grades. Our team won the Student Choice award!!!
The fifth graders are starting something new this year. It’s called Genius Hour. During Genius Hour, students are free to work on a Passion Project. Your Passion Project is something that you’re interested in, for example: If you love marine life, you could do a project on, let’s say, dolphins. You would have a research question, or a thesis. You would continue to research this question until the end of the school year. Then, you would present your project. The type of project could be anything: a slideshow, a report, a speech, a poster, stop motion, even a song! The great thing about Genius Hour is that the possibilities are endless.
These are just a few things we have been working on at Cooks Corners Elementary. We hope to see you guys at our upcoming events! Thank you and have a wonderful day!!
CANstruction
The CANstruction Team would like to give a THANK YOU to all the students and families at Cooks Corners for donating cans for our "Skillet with bacon and eggs"!
Last week we had a competition for grade levels to bring in food cans. We collected 205 cans! You have been awesome. The winners for a free choice day in STEM class are Mrs. Gonzales and Mrs. Esola's 3RD GRADERS! Thanks for all the donations!!
