Farragut Weekly Updates - 10/14/17
From the desk of Principal Ngo
Dear Farragut Foxes,
Communication, creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration are essential for the learning and growth of our 21st century students. This work is happening throughout our school in the collaboration of teachers and students, in the beautiful artwork and music that our students create, in the team-building activities in P.E., and in the mathematical and literary reasoning skills they practice everyday in and out of the classrooms. Furthermore, all of these skills come together in the Makerspace classroom where students apply science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics to create and design projects that impact the real world. The 4 C's of the 21st century classroom are taken to the next level when we help our students develop a growth mindset, where they "believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point."
As parents, we can continue this work by asking questions, engaging our children in real life problem-solving, and encouraging them to persevere when they get stuck instead of asking us for the answer. Educational researcher, Carol Dweck, talks about the power of "yet" in her work with growth mindset. When students struggle or make mistakes (which is a necessary and essential part of learning), our job is to help them see that they are on a learning curve. And, although they haven't mastered a particular skill, it doesn't mean they never will, they just haven't mastered it yet. Framing the challenges in life in this way, gives students a growth mindset versus a fixed mindset perspective on learning and life.
To learn more about growth mindset and Carol Dweck's work, watch her Ted Talk on The power of believing that you can improve.
Have a wonderful weekend and hope to see you at the Cardboard Challenge this Saturday and the PTA/Fan Club Meeting Tuesday evening (see agendas attached)!
Your proud principal,
Rebecca Ngo
P.S. - Wondering what happened to Student of the Month Awards? The Farragut Teachers and I are rethinking and revamping how awards are done at Farragut to make them more meaningful and connected to this idea of growth mindset! More info to come!

Keep Our Campus Safe
A couple safety reminders...
No Wheels on Campus - Scoot, skate, & bike to school, but please walk your wheels once you get on campus! Please help us keep our kids safe and follow our no wheels on campus rule. From 8:35-8:45am, students should be lining up and getting ready for their teacher to pick them up from the line.
Loading zone – Please remember that the front of the school is a loading zone for drop off and pick up. Please make sure to keep your car moving, so we don’t put students in precarious situations and exiting cars in the middle of the street.
Volunteer Clearance and Protocol – All parent volunteers need to have been cleared and wearing a badge when they are working with students during the school day. Even if you are staying from drop off, please take a minute to check in with Mari and get your volunteer badge. This helps us monitor who's on campus and keeps our students, staff, and volunteers safe.
HAUNTED HOUSE NEEDS BOO!
Our ghoulish Halloween elves are hard at work planning this year’s Haunted House for the Fall Festival…and they could use your help!
- Parent Volunteers!
· Saturday (Oct 14th) and/or Sunday (Oct 15th) from 11am to 3pm to help at the Ghoul Workshop (found locally at a parent’s home). Most of the pre-construction will occur on those two days.
Don’t miss out on your chance to be the cool parents that helped build this year’s creepy haunted house!
Contact Maya “the Monster” Grafmuller (maya.grafmuller@gmail.com) or Kristen “the Cadaver” Gordon (kmliming@yahoo.com) if you’d like to help!
