Sharing Second Grade
A Peek at Our Week
January 29 - February 2
MATH:
2.2 - This week students are finishing up unit 3 and beginning unit 4. They will learn to add up to four two-digit numbers using strategies based on place value and properties of operations. Keep practicing addition and subtraction facts at home!
3.1 - Students have done well with rounding to the nearest ten and hundred. We practiced using number lines and hundred charts to round. I hope your students have come home and shared the Rounding Song with you! Next week we'll be working on the commutative, associative and identity properties of addition. Please keep practicing those multiplication facts and working on RedBird for 30-minutes per week.
3.2 - This week students are learning to measure area by counting unit squares. They will also use addition and multiplication to calculate area. Keep practicing addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts!
READING:
We are continuing our narrative unit which focuses on three aspects of reading: fluency, literary language, and tracking longer stories. This week students are practicing reading at a just-right pace. For many students this means picking up the pace, and doing so in ways that improve comprehension. We are also learning to recognize literary language and understand comparisons within texts to uncover special things the authors what use to see and feel.
WRITING:
We are also continuing our fun unit on poetry! Our students have already crafted several poems as they experiment with line breaks and details to write about topics that are special to them. This week we will use precise words to create an image with our words. We will also discover how poets repeat words, sounds, and lines to give their poems music and emphasize special meanings.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
This week we are discovering how and why James Oglethorpe began a colony known as Georgia. We are also learning about the important relationship Oglethorpe had with Tomochichi, and how they worked together to create a settlement that became Savannah.
