Principal's Perspective
Dear Parents and Community,
We are totally delighted to welcome students to the 2022-2023 School Year. Entering my third year as principal of Oak Grove, I could not be more proud of the staff’s guarantee to know every single student by name, by strength, and by need -- figuring out the accommodations that each student needs in order to thrive. All across campus, it is abundantly clear that our students feel welcomed and supported. They are happy to be here (in person) and they enjoy reading at grade level. Our theme this year: Hard Work Pays Off! As you may remember, the classroom teachers and Title Support Staff gave up a week of their summer to accelerate reading and writing! Hats off to our AMAZING staff!
We are so excited to hear about all the summer reading. The plethora of books enjoyed by our students amazes me. If you participated in the Oak Grove summer read-a-thon please have your student bring the signed log to the office by Thursday, Sept 1. We will be doing the drawing for the raffle that morning at our first assembly. We will also host the “Summer Reading” pizza party for all those who participated on that Thursday during lunch.
We are committed to warm and caring relationships with every student. As some of you may remember, in the 90’s I worked as a psychiatric assistant at Philhaven Psychiatric Hospital, Children's Unit (Mt. Gretna, PA). There, I witnessed the devastating effects of trauma along with the healing capacity of resilience. Daily, I saw competent, caring adults teaching self-regulation skills to both children and parents. As time progressed, I grew more confident in my understanding and began teaching students many of these skills. After two life-changing years educating children in this setting, I deliberately shifted my career goal from psychologist to teacher. I soon earned my Masters in Education and then began a magnificent 10 years teaching sixth grade! I flourished in the classroom but my true passion was advocating for and keenly supporting any impacted students.
A few years later with my principal’s encouragement, I began a reading program for students with lagging reading skills, chronic truancies, and significant behavior issues. The learning curve was mammoth, however, over time I witnessed ridiculous student success. Warm and accountable relationships provided the bedrock for this success.
These students kept in touch and I soon I heard them describe the high school as a place that did not work for them. This compelled me to develop a 9th & 10th alternative education program. I started with a fraction of a class and success looked daunting, but by November, the class roster was full. The rumor was, “Mr. Jay really likes us, he makes learning interesting, he insists that we own our mistakes and when we mess up, and he will not kick us out.” By June, more than 90% of students had passed English, Global Studies and Life Science. Today, 14 years after its inception, this program continues to thrive and produce graduating students.
In the intervening years, I taught AP Psychology & General Psychology 201& 202 (SOU), instructed staff K -12 on formative assessment and engagement strategies, and became a trainer for Resilience and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES). Throughout the last eight years as an administrator, I coordinated Special Education, Alternative Education, 504’s (Independent Learning Programs) & TAG (Talented and Gifted) with a focus upon accelerating the social, emotional, and academic growth of every student. I credit Lorea Martinez Perez, Teaching with Heart and Mind, and Ross Greene, Lost at School, along with every one of my reluctant students for re-shaping my educational lens.
With joy, I want nothing more than your students’ educational success!

Hi Everyone!
My name is Alex, and as your new Assistant Principal, I wanted to take the opportunity to briefly introduce myself.
First off, I live just a few miles from Oak Grove Elementary, but grew up in Pennsylvania. I moved to Medford in 2016 to become South Medford High School's Business and Robotics teacher. My Mom, Nana and husband are all teachers, so we joke about how it's a family thing. But after 14 years in the classroom, I jumped into administration by becoming Ashland's Instructional Coach to help the district with their transition to distance learning by designing professional development on Canvas, Zoom and 3rd-party applications. I provided individual Elementary teachers staff development and support through the pandemic. I loved working with these teachers and students, finding ways to make online learning fun and engaging, and helping families access their learning from outside of the classroom. When I returned to South Medford as the High School's Assistant Principal, I created systems around safety, parent engagement, and student academic success. At the same time, I served as Athletic Director in a year where our students won multiple Southwest conference titles, 1st and 2nd team awards, academic excellence awards and competed in States.
My undergraduate degree is in Economics from Emory University, my Masters in Education from East Stroudsburg University and my Administrative License from SOU. I love learning! At Ashland HS, I was a member of the Humanities and Career and Technical Education departments. I've also taught math, coding and CAD as a robotics teacher, and designed and implemented Business courses and an AP Macroeconomics course. From live Shark Tanks, DECA and FIRST championships to Economics challenges judged by university professors, I'm always looking for fun ways to enhance our students' opportunities.
Of all these different roles, one of my favorites was to create district curriculum for our English Language Learners at Bethlehem Area School district (in Pennsylvania). Working with our EL teachers, I developed curriculum for our emerging EL learners from all over the world. It was so much fun to design and provide engaging lessons that sparked new content language learning, solidified critical skill building and brought fun, joy and hands-on learning to each day.
I'm excited to be taking the next step of my journey with Oak Grove and thrilled to serve its students and staff. Looking forward to meeting all of you, sharing great moments together and helping our students have an amazing and successful year.
Sincerely,
2022-2023 Oak Grove Student Arrival and Departure Procedures
If you need to change plans as to how your child will get home, please call the office by 1:00 p.m. at (541) 842-3830. If your child is NOT normally a pick up, he/she will be assigned to Entrance A (by the office).
Yellow Star/Entrance A - Front Doors by the Office facing the parking lot
Drop-off\Pick-up for Kinder, 2nd, and 4th Grades
Blue Star/Entrance B - Back Gate by the Playground\Kids Health Connection
Drop-off\Pick-up for 1st, 3rd, and 5th Grades
Red Star/Entrance C - Doors by the Bus Lane facing W. Main Street
Bus - a.m./p.m. Walk/Bike - p.m. only
How to drop off/pick up your student(s)
Please put your tag in your window. As you pull into the first parking lot, cars will form 2 lanes. If your child will be at Entrance A, please stay to the left and make a u-turn at the corner. If your child will be at Entrance B, please stay to the right and turn right at the corner. In the event that the A lane is full, you will need to use the B lane and circle around through the back line. In the event that B lane is full, you will probably be waiting in the street! Sorry!
Please drive as far forward as possible before stopping to let children in or out of your vehicle to facilitate the quick arrival and departure of many students. If you know your student will take more time getting in or out of the car, please wait and pull forward before picking them up. If possible, have your student exit on the passenger side of your vehicle. If that is not possible, please let us know and we will walk them around the car.
One last thing, we strongly request that you do not let your students out of the car in a location where they have to cross traffic to get to the sidewalk. Do not double park to get out of your car and walk them.
Thank you for your patience every day! We look forward to seeing your children in the morning and they look forward to seeing you at the end of the day. Please be courteous and remember SAFETY FIRST!
If your child arrives or leaves on the BUS:
● Your child will enter and exit the school using Entrance C.
If your student arrives or leaves by walking or riding a bike:
● Students who walk or ride a bike will come into school in the morning through the front doors at Entrance A. If you walk with your child, please say goodbye outside, only coming inside if necessary. Please remember to keep a 6 foot distance from any lines of students waiting to enter the building. After school, your child will exit through Entrance C by the bus lane. You will wait for them at the corner by the library steps and the posted WALK sign.
If your student arrives or leaves in a CAR:
● Students will arrive and depart from the same entrance - either A or B every day.
During the first week of School:
You will be given a tag during the first week to display in your window as you enter the school’s driveway.
**If you have more than one student in your vehicle, all students will be dropped off and picked up at the entrance of the YOUNGEST student in your group.**
Please double check the entrance that you will be using to drop-off and pick-up your child. It ilikely the same one as last year, but some changes did occur.

Jay Preskenis, director
Perspectiva del director
Estimados padres y comunidad,
¡Felicitaciones a nuestro INCREÍBLE personal!

¡Me encanta aprender!

Autobús - a.m./p.m. Caminar/Bicicleta - p.m. solamente
