Bands of America Regional Competition in Midland

A more detailed schedule will come out in the next week or so; however, please know we will leave early in the morning (@ 5 am) and return after the competition ends. The Jaguar Marching Band performs at 1:30 p.m., and our expected time to depart Midland is 11:30 p.m. Bus drivers will have slept while the band competes. Students will be able to sleep on the return trip. Our anticipated return time is 5:30 a.m Sunday morning.

A message from Mr. Lucita

Well, that was fun!! What a great first week of competition! Our first competition is in the books and was a huge success. It was awesome to get to see bands on the field, to hear students making awesome music, to hear the sounds of drums in the warm-up area, even getting off the buses in the lot and being hit with the smell of exhaust immediately brought so many wonderful memories from the past marching contests. I am so happy our kids are once getting to have these experiences and create wonderful memories with their friends!

Our adventures at the Champion Classic Marching Festival in Boerne were awesome! Our Jaguar Band gave a great performance and walked away with:

5A - Best Winds
5A - Best Visual Performance
5A - Best Color Guard
5A - 1st Place
Grand Champion - all divisions

It was great seeing our students' excitement and celebrations each time “Johnson HS” was announced during the awards ceremony. It was pure joy on their faces and smiles everywhere you looked! We also want to thank all of the parents who volunteered Saturday to help with the performance and also all of the parents who showed up and cheered us on from the stands! You are a huge part of helping us be successful, and we couldn’t do it without you!

Now that we have had the weekend to celebrate our success from Saturday, it is time to get back to work this week! This week the competition ramps up! We move into a much deeper and more challenging contest with twenty-seven bands competing at the Bands of America Midland Regional! We need to make sure we are ready to work hard this week and continue to improve! We will continue to add new items to our show and to adjust areas that may need improvement! It is crucial that all students are at each rehearsal and prepared to work towards improvement.

We will make a slight adjustment to this week's rehearsal schedule. We will move one hour from Tuesday afternoon to Friday afternoon. We will also move Friday’s morning rehearsal to the afternoon. This adjustment helps in multiple ways; it shortens the evening on Tuesday and removes the morning practice on Friday. Both of these will help provide the students more time to complete any make-up assignments, complete homework and finish any last-minute items before the end of school on Friday. The schedule will look like this:

Monday 5 - 8 p.m.

Tuesday 5 - 7 p.m.

Thursday 5 - 7 p.m.

Friday 5 - 7 p.m.

This week is the last week before the six weeks progress report, and this progress report will impact the students' eligibility! Friday is the deadline to turn in any assignments, homework or test make-up/retest! Let’s get everything turned in and all grades raised to the highest level! We want every student to be passing every class! Also, remember we have our band tutorials set up after school as well as the normal JHS tutorials before and after school every day. It is important to note that our band practice schedule is built in a way that our band students can attend tutorials every time they are offered, both before and after school.

This week you will receive a detailed schedule for this Saturday’s BOA Midland Regional marching contest. Students, please plan accordingly and bring your pillow on the charter bus so everyone can get lots of sleep for a long Saturday!

Let’s have another great week of rehearsals, a week of excitement and a week of continued improvement! We’ve got this!

We should have "Show Shirts" ready this week for purchase!

What is a "show shirt"? It's a shirt specifically designed to celebrate and memorialize this year's competition show. Parents can purchase them to wear them at performances - especially competitions! It is always great for the students to see their fans in the stands with the show shirt!

What do i need to know this week?

Jaguar Band Soft Shell Jacket

Cooler weather is coming and you'll want to be ready to show your school spirit all fall and winter in our super soft and comfortable Soft Shell Jacket. This item is in an attractive Battleship Grey color with an incredibly soft lining and slight stretch to the water-resistant fabric. The Jaguar logo will be embroidered on the left chest with optional text embroidery available (max. 10 characters). This is the perfect winter companion for every Jaguar! Don't miss out! New Volunteers & VIP

Are you a new volunteer? Please know that once you register with VIP you do not get a notice from the district that you are cleared. Please follow up your registration with emailing a photo of yourself to Tracye for your badge and then checking in with her to find out when it's ready for pick-up. Unless you hear something from the district, go ahead and assume you are cleared to volunteer twenty-four hours after submitting your application.

Sign-Making Parties & Send-offs for Competition

Names on Uniform Parts

Please write your student's name in their shoes with a white or silver paint pen. Also write names in summer uniform parts (i.e. polo, khaki shorts, CG leggings/pants and tops) If you need to order replacement shoes for any reason, click here.

Grading Period and Eligibility

The grading period for eligibility cut-off date (no pass, no play) is October 1, one day before BOA-Midland! Please help your student keep up their grades so that they can travel and perform at BOA-Midland with the group.

Practice shirts for this week: (this will be the order of practice shirts for every week unless we update you with any necessary changes)

Monday: white

Tuesday: black

Thursday: grey

Friday: white

Saturday: black (on bus)

Competition performance uniform: We should have our show-themed costumes this week! Make sure to bring the following items on Saturday:

  1. Bodywrapper
  2. black jazz shoes (wear black thin no show socks)
  3. Hair products for "Show Hair" (Hair must be up)
  4. Makeup (Show makeup)


Uniform replacement policy:

Please know that if your student forgets one of the items listed below, they will need to purchase a replacement as we cannot "lend" these out because we cannot resell used items. Furthermore, there are approximately 200 members in the marching band, and handing these items out without recouping cost is way too costly and unsustainable.

We accept cash or credit card. If students are unable to pay on that day, your account will be billed. Please know that any debt left outstanding will result in a hold with the school that could prevent your student from such things as purchasing prom tickets to qualifying for exemptions from finals.

Lastly, for Band and Guard students, please put your student's name on ALL UNIFORM PARTS. We recommend using paint pens/sharpies. If they are labeled, we can get those items back to your student - if they are not labeled, we cannot get those items back to them and it may result in you paying unnecessarily for replacements.

black gloves $3 (gloves will be passed out this week)

With that said, if you have old summer uniform items that your student no longer uses and that are in good shape, please send those to the band hall. The uniform crew will be creating a "Uniform Closet" from which will first be utilized to assist any families in need and, if sizes are available, students can check out to borrow. Please know that if the item is not returned within 5 school days, your account will be charged the appropriate amount and outstanding debts will result in holds for your student as was explained above.

For national holidays a 3’ x 5’ flag on a pole will be placed in your front yard.
